Does it bother anyone else?

It broke my heart when I was a kid, and it still does. But I don't find it all that disturbing. Just look at the era Disney was in when the movie was released: Fox and the Hound, Tarzan, Mulan, Bambi

Disney was no stranger to deaths back then. Their movies were for all ages, and death is a natual thing. Personally, I wish it was more like that today.
