i suppose TLK helped me get over the deaths of my great aunt and my uncle. that's one of the reasons i love it so much. oh, and it also helped me get over the death of my nan's dog.

No I don't have a problem with the movie at all. I think it teaches us alot of life lessons as a kid. Which is what I think is missing in today's movies. Is that you don't really learn any life lessons. In a way I could relate to this movie. Cause I lost my dad at a very young age. So, I can definitely relate to what Simba went through. But it basically tells you. You can't change the past so there is no point in running from it. You just gotta face your problems.

No, it doesn't really bother me that Disney used some mature themes in LK 1 or 2. It was based off of Hamlet, after all, and it was using the Good versus Evil theme. Death is the part of life, as well, and no one can avoid it. The movies teach people to move on, to make a life for themselves. As JustinS said, and it is very true: You cannot run from the past, and you've got to face your problems.

I mean, both Lion King movies are pretty violent for kids' movies, and the themes of death, growing up, and guilt couldn't be more adult. But somehow the characters are so lovable that it works, and you don't really dwell on the harsh things that are actually happening for a lot of the movie. Like, Scar is one messed up dude... saying that to Simba after his dad died? And then waiting for him to go and flatly saying, "Kill him." Pretty heavy.

i cried when Mufasa died - still do. Apart from that it doesnt bother me - though i can see why it would for some people. My friend has refused to watch it since she was 8 years old because she said it was "mean"

I actually find it the direct opposite of being disturbing! All these endless euphemisms in kid movies and cartoons these days sicken me... Would you like the Lion King to be for kids only? Enjoy watching Blue's Clues' new episode: "Who sent the lion cub's dad to heaven?" -.-

And again, it's not a kids movie. A kid's movie would be something like Dora the Explorer. It's a movie for all ages. Just because it's suitable for all ages doesn't mean it's meant for kids. The people at Disney's and Pixar's animation studios make movies they themselves would like to see. ;]

Also, I think it has a certain educational value, like QueenRalexia mentioned above me. There's a moral to it, and a quite big one actually. You don't actually see Mufasa die, there's no blood, etc. so I don't see why anything in this movie would be explicit for children.

It has never bothered me. I’ve never found it disturbing.
Death (and violence) is a part of life, there’s no way you can avoid it. Just because TLK is a Disney movie, doesn’t mean they should take out everything related to serious subjects. Kids need to learn about this stuff too. I watched TLK for the first time when I was 8, and eventhough I was very sad to see Mufasa die, I was never scared by the madness of Scar or the dramatic battle at the end.

On a sidenote, I’m glad Disney decided to actually show the dead body of Mufasa. It felt right for the movie. In Bambi, f.ex the death of the parent is handled in a very different way. We hear the gunshot, and we all know Bambi’s mother didn’t escape the hunter, but we never actually see her body. It would have ruined the mood and innocence of the whole movie..
