I never felt that Simba was "squeaky clean". He ran away, came back, killed the king, then exiled half of his pride. Real hero.

I think he was more afraid to face them than anything. After all, he thought it was his fault that Mufasa was dead. He was just justifying his decision through Hakuna Matata.

I don't think Simba wanted them to die. He just was afraid of Scar and his former Pride. He asumed that Scar told them that the Stampede was Simba's fault. Like Moka said, he tried to justify this through Hakuna Matata.
