Both of which could not have been achieved had he not been set out from the beginning to die.

Mufasas death is a very sad and emotional scene (Disney really knows how to pull at your heartstrings) I agree with what Harvs said about blood, it wouldn`t be unrealistic to see a trickle of blood from Mufasas paw when Scar dig his claws into them, f.ex. Naturally, Mufasas body would be horribly beaten and bloody by the end of the stampede, but there`s no need for gore.

The only Disney films in which I have seen blood (that I can think of right now) is little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast. In Bolt, he mentiones that his paw is bleeding, but no blood is actually shown. Disney is scared of blood. :P

Mufasas death is essential to the movie, and it is this incident and the relastionship between father and son which stands at the centre of the TLK story.

From what I remember reading about Tangled, it ended up getting a PG rating because you see blood for like...half a second. I definitely think they could've added some bruises etc. on Mufasa's body to make it a bit more realistic....I'm sure most kids can handle that sort of thing. But it's not something that really bothers me to be honest. This scene always makes me sob regardless.

As cruel as it sounds, but without Mufasa's death, The Lion King would have been one of Disney's more boring movies.

The dynamic and emotions that the death brings to the movie are what sets it apart from all other coming-of-age stories.
