Well, first of all,not considering the story, there's always the need of a dramatic build-up in movies.
Then, what's the point of telling a cub this when he won't understand it,and what's the point of telling this to a teenager when he's not even ready nor strong enough to be defeat Scar and be a king. Rafiki finding out about Simba being alive and Nala's appearing was the perfect time to appear to Simba.
And it wouldn't he halfway that interesting and dramatic if Mufasa has told him just to get his behind to Pride Rock. It also wouldn't be in Mufasa's nature to say something like that. And well,he said what he had to say, cause Simba did return.
In this case, which I feel more inclined to agree with, the makers of this film had NO reason to establish this kid as someone, and then have Timon and Pumbaa completely brainwash all of the previous character's traits. That said, why did we even have to watch the first part of the film? It would have been much more appropriate to start the film when he first met Timon and Pumbaa.
That doesn't make much sense, why would you not watch the whole movie. There would be no plausible plot, nor would the movie feel complete. You wouldn't even know who Mufasa is nor why Simba got there where he did.
It seems like you're only watching the movie to analyze the characters.

I agree with TIM! You have to watch the full movie! If you watch it to were they find Timon and Pumbaa, you wouldnt understand why Simba is sad. So thats not a good idea... :/

I think Rafiki's magic has something to do with why Simba didn't see anything before.

But I loved this scene, made Mufasa seen infinately more powerful than he ever could have been alive.

I felt really inspired actually. I like the idea that his father is watching over him. Also, James Earl Jones made that scene, he did a great job as Mufasa throughout, and that is one of his best scenes in the film!

It's a truly epic scene. There is no way to top your father appearing in the midst of a thunderstorm and telling you to remember who you are. Pure awesomeness.
