The reason Simba is such a complex character is really Mufasas death. It shaped him in a huge way. I think Kiara is a simpler character because she has lived a much easier and protected life. Plus, Kovu and Zira are pretty complex characters, so Kiara comes off as more flat and simple compared to them.

I think that many TLK fans, myself included, expected Simba to be almost exactly like Mufasa in the sequel, and expected Simba's son to be almost exactly like Simba. The more I think about it, the more unoriginal it would have been. Instead, we got SP Simba, who is a good king but has trouble because he tries too hard to be Mufasa. And we got Kiara, who is adventurous like Simba, but doesn't really want to take over the throne and doesn't grow up to be as big and powerful of a lioness as Nala did in TLK. I thought that Kiara's character was a nice contrast to Simba and Nala's characters in TLK.
