Still, the subtitle at the point where they said they meant to add it, likely would've given the impression that it was two years later from the last seen scene, like such subtitles usually mean. (: And what was that last sentence about? I didn't say he looks younger at the end of Hakuna Matata. Younger than what anyway? o.O

Adolescent. But that would mean he would still GROW in some way physically and he wouldn't and didn't in the film. o.O How can they call him adolescent but draw him look just like Mufasa in every way (apart from somewhat younger face)? o.O Was Mufasa adolescent in the script, too? I doubt. Which leads me to believe the animators/producer decided Simba would need to be older than the script say. I mean, if they really meant him to come off as adolescent, wouldn't they have made a huge difference between him and the age his father's looks.

Hmm... I checked the August 1993 script. It doesn't seem like it was meant exactly the same we see today.

It says "...during each we see Simba grow until he is a mane-tooting adolescent." As in not full-maned but mane-tooting is where the script describes his growth to end at the fastforwarding his growth during Hakuna Matata.

The scene from the film where they intended the "2 years later" subtitles is missing from this script's point, resulting in The Under the Stars scene is attached to the Hakuna Matata song. "At the close of the song we find Timon, Pumbaa and adolescent Simba lying on their backs under the night sky." Whether this means he's still a mane-tooting adolescent is unclear, because of the following:

"As the Lioness leaps, Simba (now an adolescent), jumps into frame and knocks her down."

Isn't that "(now an adolescent)" addition implying that they meant him to have grown since the last scene, the Under the Stars? I see they use the same word 'adolescent' as in the previous scene, but why add it in brackets with the word 'now', in the middle of the sentence if he hadn't changed in any way since the last scene?

I'm pretty sure they meant years pass by during Hakuna Matata song and after it, and that in this script he was supposed to look younger during Hakuna Matata than when Nala finds him and they have the CYFTLT scene.

But I don't know, it gets really confusing when they go and change the script as drastically as they did here. I mean, ending Simba's growth to mane-tooting adolescent unlike in teh film, completely lacking an entire scene where the subtitle was intented, implying Simba had grown between Hakuna Matata and Nala, and not making any clear mention of years in the script. Hmm.

EDIT: I think I found my answer:

"Early plot lines called for much of the story to revolve around Simba as an adolescent. Subsequent changes made the following Character Designs virtually obsolete. The adolescent Simba is seen on screen only briefly to show the passing of years during the "Hakuna Matata" musical number." - And then they show some character designes of Simba with only some bits of mane. (Laserdisc)

Subsequent changes, virtually obselete & adolescent Simba seen only briefly... I take is saying that they changed him from adolescent into a young adult which he appears in the film, and that he indeed isn't adolescent in the final outcome. And perhaps that as it was left briefly there to show the passing of years, they meant more than two years to pass by during Hakuna Matata number. At least that's how I'd interpret it.
