That's what we've been saying, Snow would have been much more devastating and the ash is easily recognized.
Ash gives it a symbolism too... Simba and Zira's hate are the ashes, and they are the flowers that grew from the ashes. :3

((kinda off topic but here goes: "From the ashes a fire is woken, a light from the shadows shall spring, renewed shall be blade that was broken, the crownless again shall be king."))((you reminded me of that))

The next generation is given a chance to move on and become better, a new hope is born and a light can be seen.

When I watched this when I was younger, I always thought it was snow. But I believe it's -ash-?

Wow! I never relized that the ash did represent the fued between Simba and Zira and the flowers represents Kiara and Kovu's love. That's something special. The ash was from the fire that was around when kiara was on her solo hunt.

Perhaps it did, perhaps we are merely making it up to please ourselves, but I would like to believe that this symbolism gives the movie an unDisneylike level of meaning and purpose.

My sister and I always debate whether or not it's ash or sand, but never snow. That just doesn't make sense. I personally think it's ash, but it could be either. :hey9:

Well, since the land beneath the ash is regrowing, It would seem that the white-grey substance on the ground was the ash resultant of the destruction of the previous ecosystem and now the offspring are growing from the nutrients of the ash....
