Laurel and Hardy were a comedic acting duo in the 1940's and 50's ( I think I have the time right but I'll have to look it up to be sure).
Technically, more like the 1920s to 1940s
Now back to the topic, The Lion King, as we should know by now, was inspired by Hamlet so the two characters that are similiar to Timon and Pumbaa are Rosencrantz and Guildenstern as they are friends of Hamlet. Though, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are more like the hyenas since in the play, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern work with King Claudius to kil Hamlet same as the hyenas who work with Scar to kill Simba. Also, I recall Nathan Lane saying Timon and Pumbaa are like the "Shakespearean clowns" in an interview with AFI, which would relate with Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. So, I don't think Timon and Pumbaa are based on Laurel and Hardy.
