Has the Lion King held up?

Yes and No

Yes: As we saw last year, it made more money than the blockbuster everyone was expecting.

No: By today's standards, it's too short. LOL!

Young Nala's scene was one short and continuous scene.

If LK was made today, they would have padded that. And it would have lasted 1 hr and 45 minutes to 2 hours.

All very good answers, and even I, the one who asked the question, must say yes.

It is not my favorite movie anymore, but that is just because I like new things. I don't like to dwell on the past for long, I'd rather give new things a try.

The Lion King however has managed to keep a steadfast fanbase over the years of its existence. And not a dumb fanbase either, no very smart and very respectful people.

Is The Lion King flawless, no. But that is a good point saying that nothing is perfect.

Like everyone else has said, yes Lion King holds up great. Nothing I can think of makes the movie seem old or out-dated in any way.

Please don't take offense to this because such is not my intent, but for me the fact that Lion King is my favorite movie does not prevent me from liking new movies that come out. For example I enjoyed Ice Age: Continental Drift so much I saw it three times in theaters, the only other movies I have seen three times in the theaters are Lion King (In it's original theatrical run in 1994) and (Marvel's) The Avengers.

Off topic, but I thought Ice Age 4 was terrible compared to the last three. I was hoping we would see more of Diego and Shira.

Aside from that, did you smile when they pinned one another? 8-)

I absolutely think The Lion King has held up because good storytelling with universal themes and emotions is timeless. The dialogue avoided using any kind of fad-chasing slang or hip pop-culture references that could date the film, so that's also a plus.

The only thing that could possibly date it is that it was made using a more traditional animation technique rather than the the CGI style that took over not too long afterward. However, it's a stunning example of the medium, so I don't even count that against it. There might be minor flaws, but nothing that makes me think it won't still be remembered as a classic in the years to come.

EDIT: I do agree with those of you who wish it was a bit longer.

You don't think the quote 'You have no idea' doesn't date it?

I say no because most who get it are adults and that's a classic line. You are right in that the animation could date it.

If anything, the fact that The Lion King was not done as a pure CGI film might help it out in the end. Because let's face it: how many CGI films were thought of as great, but then you look back at them several years later and realize that not only were they not as good as you remembered them, but that they also looked worse than you remembered.

The Lion King doesn't have to worry about having CGI technology improving, because the CGI in The Lion King was used to aid the hand-drawn animation, and not to replace it.
