Kiara and the bird

At the beginning of We Are One, Kiara and Simba are looking at a mother bird with small chicks. One of the baby birds fly out of the nest, chirping happily. Kiara looks at the bird, smiling.



Then the mother bird makes it fly back to the nest, and when Kiara sees his, her ears droop, and she looks sad.



At the very end of the song, after Simba walks away, Kiara sees the very same bird flying towards her. She watches it fly towards the horizon, and as she does so, she looks sad, then thoughtful.



I love the symbolism, but I wanted to hear what everyone else thinks about this. What do you think is going through Kiara’s mind as she watches the bird fly away?

I think maybe she finally sees what Simba is doing, trying to protect her. I still think he overdoes it, though

I just think she's considering the circle of life. When she sees the bird at first, it's flying free. When nearly falls and is pushed back into the nest, she becomes sad, realizing that's basically a metaphor of what's just happened to her. At the end though, the same bird is flying freely once more, this time without its mother/father watching it. It's grown up. Kiara's hesitant at leaving the nest, but becomes thoughtful and acknowledges that someday it will be her time to blossom. At least, that's how I've interpreted it. =]

Well, I have always thought about it like this:

Kiara first notices the bird, feeling happy on its behalf because it flies out of the nest on it’s own.
Then the bird is made to go back to the nest, with it’s mother practicly squashing it.

I think this is simply a representation of what had happened to Kiara that same day. She broke away from Simbas path and explored on her own before her father took her back home..

Later when she sees the bird again, she once more feels happy for it for being able to fly alone and free, without anyone holding it back.
Then, when she sees it fly away, she is sad because she feels trapped in her role as Queen-to-be. I think Kiara felt in that moment that she would be tied to her nest (Pride Rock) forever, because of her birthright and obligation to the pride. She would never be free like that bird, she would never be able to leave and live her own life.

^ this! :) Couldn't have said it better myself. I think that's the precise type of symbolism that Disney was going for too and I love how subtle it is. Takes a really thoughtful mind to pick up upon these little clues within the movie. :)
