Yet Simba failed to understand his own teaching. Interesting.
Why do you think that? Because Simba didn't let the Outlanders return to the Pride Lands? Because he fought against his own kind? Think about it, they were banished for a reason. They shared the same goal as Zira. It's not hard to see that Zira is completely obsessed about killing Simba and reclaiming Scar's thrown (which, if that were to happen, would have had the same result as Scar's rule). Letting them return to the pride because they're lions would be like saying "Oh, you may have committed many serious crimes, but that's completely fine because we're both human." He did not want to fight them. He gave them chances to avoid violence, but they wouldn't accept it. It HAD to be Kiara to convince them that they are "one". She's the only one that was completely innocent. They wouldn't have listened to Simba because he was the one who banished them and their main enemy.

He exiled Kovu due to the evidence and experience from his perspective. Due to Kovu being raised by Zira, who is completely like Scar, Simba had suspicions of whether or not Kovu was also like Scar, which he originally was. The fire rescue also raised suspicion, since a fire would not randomly start in the field in such clear weather. Finally, the ambush confirmed his suspicions (from his perspective). Kiara's being against it was based solely on feeling and emotion. If Simba listened to Nala and Kiara from the beginning, he would have accepted Kovu after the rescue, which would have resulted in him being fatally wounded (I still doubt Kovu would be able to kill him even if he had the element of surprise and some back up), even more so than from the ambush, and probably would have resulted in Zira and Kovu taking over the kingdom. Remember that Kovu was following the plan until he played and fell in love with Kiara.
And ditched him 5 seconds later despite Kovu not even laying a hand on him and telling him that he's innocent?
It's quite the opposite, actually. Simba was talking to Kovu, walking around the Pride Lands. The area that was burned was in the Pride lands, since there would be no way for Zira to know if Kiara would go to the Outlands. Simba would not expect the outsiders to be in the Pride Lands, since they were banished and there was a penalty for returning. But since Zira said she wouldn't let Kovu betray them, she probably had lionesses spying on Kovu, which would explain how they knew Simba was alone. Zira made it seem like it was all part of the plan with Kovu, which made Simba believe that Kovu had betrayed him. During the ambush, KOVU ditched SIMBA after taking one kick from Vitani. Then he flees from the battle, leaving Simba to fend for himself against 10s of lionesses. After Simba manages to escape, he is barely able to walk, and Kovu doesn't help him return to pride rock. With no support at all from Kovu, him assuming Kovu was behind it was completely justifiable. Saying he's innocent doesn't prove anything when all evidence is against him.
Mufasa didn't need guidance from his father, he knew how to get things done by himself.
Mufasa was A GOOD FATHER.
Mufasa was taught by his father, Simba was not. Being an overprotective father is not being a bad father.

Whew, that was a lot of typing. I guess the reason why I like to see Simba's actions as reasonable is because I'm not a big fan of Kovu.
