Rafiki might grab random grasses that float bye all the time as a form of news gathering. He didn't pay any particular attention to Simba's patch of grass until he realized that it had Simba's scent on it, so it really looked like something he does on a regular basis.

It's like reading the newspaper, and suddenly reading some great news. You don't know that the paper is special, and treat it as another news source. Only when you finally read it do you realize that it held an important message.
