Oh man, how could I forgotten that Mufasa was still severily injured? I guess I got carried away because the thought of Mufasa surviving would bring a happier ending, although Mufasa could have waited to regain his full strength to do that which I mentioned above. But, if he survived, he was still badily injured and weak, and like Kops said, he would have been killed by the hyenas if he returned to Pride Rock.

Man, you guys are no fun. :p This is a "What if...?", not a "Do you think it's possible?"

Suppose he landed on the site of an inter-dimensional rift, out of which, at the very last moment, a giant, comfy pillow appeared and cushioned his fall? And the stampede more than likely did very little to him after he landed, because when a 500lb predator falls from the sky, the wildebeest' first instinct is going to be to avoid the giant lump of meat in the way. Some may accidentally trip or stumble over him, but very few would actually do any major damage.

So, thanks to the pillow, he's taken no real damage to his body, and thanks to the stray, clumsy wildebeest who never gets invited to wildebeest parties (best friends with the guy who got left behind because he tripped down the gorge wall in the beginning of the scene), he's got a mild concussion and amnesia as a side effect. The rift reopens near the end of the stampede and takes the pillow with it.

Scar comes, does his evil stuff (like a bawss), and leaves to work on his "charismatic face" for his speech later on. Mufasa wakes up, goes "What the bloody hell just happened? And, blimey! When did I become British?", and stumbles off up the gorge, following the stampede.

Now... WHAT IF...?

He probably would go back to pride rock, Scar would be exiled for attempted murder, and then he would search for Simba, knowing that he might not be dead. Whether or not Simba would be found is questionable. Either way, it would make for an interesting story later if Mufasa was still alive.
