Nala is extremely important to the overall plot of The Lion King. She, in the second film, gave guidance to Simba when he was frequently troubled by Kovu, and she, like the others have said, gave him excellent insight. In the first film, she proved a good friend, Simba's mate, and she also pushed Simba to the edge. He needed a good telling-off after his "Hakuna Matata" that made him carefree.
Overall, Nala is important to the plot in all three films. The third film doesn't show Nala as much, but she plays the same basic role as in the first and second. She also has great leadership and responsibility; almost has the same characteristics as Sarabi: loyal, brave, and smart. These are key roles in being a queen; she was Simba's mentor and advisor when Zazu wasn't there. That meant that Nala was more personal to him than Zazu. Nala proved to be his friend, whereas Zazu annoyed him as a cub.
This is my opinion on the subject.
'Cause you're beautiful. Like no other. Flawless, absolutely flawless.
