Using previous memberHQ threads system

Hi! Welcome to the Feedback forum.
Before reading anything or asking anything; please check out the FAQs. Your question might be in there. However if you want a better understanding after reading the FAQs, like if it didn't explain it good enough, then by all means ask your question.

Please read the following before posting in this forum...

In this forum you will see an Announcement, and several "sticky" topics. The announcement is the Universal Board Rules. If you are new, read this before doing anything else! The sticky topics will stay above and separated from normal user-made topics in the forum. This is because they outline important information about the board. If you see a sticky topic concerning your issue, please reply with your question or concern in the correct topic. Moderators will see your reply within these topics. Before asking your question, be sure to read the topic and its first page especially. It contains information about your issue that is valuable and may even answer your questions. If the topic does not answer your question, ask your question within the topic, not the forum. If no sticky topic concerns your issue, then you are welcome to ask your own questions by creating a new topic within the forum.

Thank you for keeping the Board Help forum organized!

I'll agree that when I used the word Totalitarianism it may be a quite a bit to strong, but none the less the decision should be made before everyone with their input; ultimately leaving it for Moka to decide.

There are levels of discipline which could be implemented. For example say that a member spams in a certain subforum. After his second warning move him into another group which does not have the ability to post in that subforum for a while instead of an outright ban.

So another words:

Member 1 creates spam topic.
Mod warns Member 1.
Member 1 creates another spam topic.
Mod warns Member 1 and moves him into a new usergroup that does not have the ability to post in the section in which he spammed.
Mod deems an appropriate time in which he would not be allowed to post in that section.

After that time he is allowed to post in that section again. Follow?

That's actually harder to do than the proposals we've been discussing, LOL.

Solution 1: Prevent new members from being able to create OT threads until certain conditions have been met.

Pros:
will cut down on the number of pointless topics being created
will not give mods more power

Cons:
could create spam in the TLK sections
could prevent new members from feeling welcome

Solution 2: Change nothing, but continue to lock the pointless threads that are occasionally created.

Pros:
none

Cons:
none

Solution 3: Modify the rules so that members can be banned for creating threads that are deemed pointless.

Pros:
will cut down on the number of pointless topics being created

Cons:
must give mods more power (which could be abused), to interpret what constitutes a pointless topic

Solution 4: Eliminate all member chat threads, and replace with a few general chat threads

Pros:
will completely eliminate many pointless threads from ever being created in the HQ
does not give mods more power

Cons:
???

My thoughts exactly. Banning is good if you still don't understand after one warning.

@Regulus cons to solution number four: People whinning about their chat threads.

The problem is super simple to fix. Lock the spam threads. Set up a system that locks a thread after, say, a 90 day period of inactivity or something, which by the way locked topics can be unlocked if necessary, and have the members make 10 posts in tlk sections before doing anything in Member HQ. Problem Solved! And that takes all of... 15, maybe 20 minutes! It's not that difficult!

And sure, if a member spams, send them a warning! If they do it over and over again, give them a ban! Those are the rules that are already there. It makes sense.

You guys have blown this into a huge production, when it is really very, very easy to fix. No matter what we do, we cant get rid of spammers, but there are simple ways to reduce them! I think every single one of you need to take a step back, take a few deep breaths, and actually think it through.

sorry to come off this annoyed, but really, are 12 pages of arguments really necessary?

While I am for changing nothing, let's wait for Moka to read this... largely spammed topic and decide what to do with his forum.

Don't you see guys? You are complaining about spam, and in this very topic, roughly half the posts are spam. It's not the system that is at fault here, but people. Grow up already.

I personally think just one chat thread would be sufficient. I mean, if you want to chat... Go on MSN or Skype xD

Yes, because we want to solve this in a democratic way. There is no hate, this is an intelligent discussion.

I must say I'd like what Woeler says to be done, but we can't be that much harsh, I guess.. So why not take the solution 4, and regulating also the Q&a threads somehow.. I mean, make 30-40 posts on tlk sections, be here for at least 2 months and you'll have a guaranted right to create a Q&A thread(without limitating them to post in the other OT sections, just preventing them from making these QA threads.), also delating them after 90 days of inactivity.
