Single Player or Multi-player?

Postby DGFone » November 29th, 2011, 9:46 am

This one can really divide players, and really is driving the industry right now. But in the end, which do you like better: Single-Player gaming, or Multi-player gaming?

I have to say single player myself. Back at the turn of the millennium, people did not have a reliable internet connection. What was forced to be? Great games with a great story, characters, atmosphere, etc. The kind of games that you can enjoy almost any time, and you know that they will be good. Even today, all the big name games all started out as single-player wonders (even if they jumped the shark afterwards). Here are some examples of great single-player games that jumped over to multi-player when the internet improved: Halo, Call of Duty, Command & Conquer, Battlefield (you can argue that it was multi-player to begin with, but the bots got worse over time - just look at BF 3 compared to 1942) and many more that I have't played yet.

As I like to say, I have a life other than just video games, so the argument of "just play more and you'll get better" won't work for me, as I don't have time to get good.

And my biggest grievance with multi-player: more often than not, you will come across cheaters and grievers who make the game unplayable, no matter what the game.

Yes, multi-player can be much, much better than single player, but this is how it goes (at least for me): Multi-player has truly awesome moments every now and then. They last a short time and then are gone. In between those moment,s you have normal game-play, all the way down to the cheaters and grievers.

Single-player usually cannot compete with the pinnacles of multi-player, but it is much more consistent. I find that I prefer the great (note, not super-great) game-play of a single-player campaign to waiting for that next multi-player crowning moment. So on average, I enjoy single player much more than the internet has to offer.

And sort of tacked on: Not really a problem for me, but it sometimes is, and I know people who do suffer from it: Multi-player has to have you connected to the internet. No reliable connection? Can't play! Single player doesn't have this problem.

its a good question and tbh i think your poll needs a thrid option for people who do both. I play alot of games and each one has pros and cons for single and multi player (except one i havnt found the con yet) let me go through them

Team Fortress 2
There really isnt a single player option really only the tutorial and thats it, yes you can fight bots but they get predictable too fast. it was a game designed for multiplayer world wide and so it is its wacky in your face funny and a great laugh only down side its been out soooo long you do get hackers and cheats but then all you do is leave the game your in and find another

League of Legends
The 'single player' in this puts you against bots which you can set up yourself. More often than not they are predictable but its a great way to learn to characters or just have a laugh with friends. Playing with and against other people can be a risk especially at lower level you get those people who are noobs/trolls/ generally annoying that can spoil a whole game especially if both teams are like that but as you climb levels you get better players and much less noobs

COD
The single players of the recent games have been ok (MW has been awesome) but black ops was on the side of farfetched for my tastes and MW1-3 has a continuing good strong storyline which has got people hooked. The single player also allows you to pick up and try weapon combos outside of multiplayer and gives you something to aim for in that area. As for gameplay in multiplayer itself.. in the older ones it got sick of them the maps were so open and no cover all i ever played was grenade spammers and snipe campers the most recents maps are better for that more cover less open space but suffers from a repeat pattern of 'we have seen this scene setting before'

Assassins creed
my fav game and for reason single and multi-player look good sound good the main story always sinks me in no matter what as for multiplayer its the most 'friendly' i have come across. unlike COD if you are level 1 they dont put you in a game with lvl 60's etc only people your level so you have a fair chance. it utilizes all the things that are good from single player and adapts perfectly into a multi universe the various ranges of characters add that extra area of diversity

I think the best games are co-op on system. Whatever happened to playing games with people who are in the same room as you? It seems to have been lost

Otherwise, single-player.

There are too many teamkillers in mulitplayer. Not to mention, not everyone who has a 360 can pay for Xbox Live. And can't play on Playstation's online stuff, because they don't have and can't afford a PS3.

Single-Player for me. I dunno, I seem to enjoy them the most because of the developed storylines. Multi-player games can get dull at times, to me at least... Not to mention the cheating and the drama, if there's a chatroom. I only enjoy them if I play them with friends.

Depends on the game, and whether it is online or split screened MP

Single player.

Playing a game online in the same maps in a multiplayer mode over and over again feels boring really quickly for me. If I play a game on multiplayer, that would be with friends.

Enjoy your time while you still can play games without a pause button, my friend.

I forgot to mention it in my initial post, but something you really start to miss (which gets more often the older you get) is a game that you can pick up and play at a moment's notice, and drop it just as quickly. Multi-player doesn't have that luxury, and I lost count of how many games I lost/got kicked because I had to suddenly go AFK fora few minutes.

Multi-player: *real life comes calling* "Come on! Really?!?!?" *Gets up* ... ... ... *returns* "You have been kicked due to inactivity" or "you have been defeated" or (insert game losing screen here)

But in single player: "Oh no! Family's calling" *press escape button* ... ... ... ... *return minutes later, sometimes hours* "Now where was I? Ah yes.. *press escape button again, proceed to continue from same point*

I love the pause button. It's so bad. You can even call it a game breaker.
