I do think things can change. It is because people think and believe things can't change is why they don't change. It takes someone to truly be rooted to what they say; to go out and set their mind to changing it. 1 Person can change things. Hitler; one man changed the whole infrastructure of government in Germany. Though not for the better. If someone puts their mind and body to change for the better they can. One man can gain the followers then they can change the government. It is because people have no faith in government and because people are swayed back and forth by hollow reasons. A stand on gay marriage for example has swayed voters back and forth between Obama and Romney. That reason should be one of the last reasons to base your vote on. Nit picky things like that should not dictate your vote. People need to look at the overall effect on their choice. It is a complete facade to say the Obama has not helped the Economy. If congress which we the people voted in is undermining it all then what can he do Veto it? If he does it simply goes back to congress gets passed again with the necessary votes and the president has no choice.

The problem to me is that for humans to survive, we have to realize the resources we have to work with. That forming governments of people to control people and land is an inevitable slide to tyranny, war and bloodshed. People need to learn to respect the planet, mankind, and it's resources on it's own without a government forcing it to. But if people continue to be owned and corrupted by money and power, they're doomed to the fate of every nation.

The sad thing is selfishness is no longer an attribute of the rich alone, but off those they get to follow them. Even those of average wealth have learned to loathe the less fortunate as freeloaders. We have to learn that no human deserves to die no matter how lazy they may be. Nations are means of control and deception and nothing more.

I don't see a good future on our own part either. We are still killing each other over ridiculous reasons. Look at the middle-east, look at the poor countries in Africa. People killing and getting killed. What is the difference between a hard working US civilian and a hard working Pakistani civilian? nothing. What is the difference between a hard working European civilian and a hard working African civilian? nothing.

It is time we wake up and realize that our enemy is not in some distant land. They are not people whose names we don't know and cultures we don't understand. The enemy is people we know very well and people we can identify. The enemy is a system that wages war when it is profitable, the enemy is the CEO's who lay us off from our jobs when it is profitable, it is the insurance companies who deny us healthcare when it is profitable, it is the banks who take away our homes when it is profitable.

Our enemies are not 5000 miles away, they are right here at home.

So if we won't destroy ourselves because we simply destroy our planet, we will destroy ourselves by greed. As long as we don't realize that the only problem is our greed. we will always express our greed in the form of killing other human beings and racism.

Humans aren't good beings by nature, that is a lie and a delusion.

Nah, but seriously, I'm pretty hopeful. Contrary to what it seems like a lot of y'all are feeling, I'm very optimistic about human nature. Sure, there are definitely some problems, generally either conflict over cultural differences or poor distribution of wealth in the world. Honestly for all the tyranny and that stuff, the world's on a hell of a continuum here, guys. Look at life and liberty a thousand years ago, then 500 years ago, then 100 years ago, then now. Look at the progress the world has made on human rights, peacekeeping, quality of life, medicine, clean energy, tolerance! How about tolerance? God, how far have women's rights come in the last decade in the world? How about right now as they battle for equality before Catholicism and, more importantly abroad, in Muslim countries of the far east?

We're still working out kinks to be sure. Woeler brings up a good point: capitalism encourages materialism, that's for sure. Are we cool with that? Well, it works better than any other economic systems we've got down, so I guess that's what we've got. Capitalism breeds war I guess. There really isn't -that- much war in the world: the Middle East's a mess that needs sorting out, but other than that... it's looking damn peaceful to me. Syria, I guess. Conditions in Africa? Let's talk about human nature: Remember Bill Gates, the guy who's devoting his life and 50 billion dollar fortune to charity, and has all but eliminated Malaria, saving millions of lives, out of pure goodwill? ohhh yaaaaa.

So I'm pretty confident. I look forward to declaring a double major in International Studies and Political Sciences and trying to understand and work on the problems in the world. Frankly, I think some of y'all need to go say hi to your neighbors and realize that the evil people are capable of is greatly exaggerated, while the capacity for human compassion is always underestimated. Just my opinion though, I s'pose.

Woeler, I do agree with you. We shouldn't be sticking our noses in other countries buisness. So what if they have a war. Unless they ask specifically for our help, we shouldn't bother. We weren't made to be the world's peace keepers and pretending that we are just makes it so that the other countries hate us.

Unless our generation gets our heads out of our butts and stop focusing on our selfish needs for technology and to get what we want when we want it, the world is going to belly flop.

Let them. It is not our business. We just let them do what they want. The US or Europe don't get involved because they have to, but because they want to. And what is worse, the reasons why both sides would start a war are ridiculously stupid.

Proves again that human intelligence has its limits, but human stupidity doesn't. The whole reason this planet is going to hell is because of human stupidity. China not wanting to change their rules to get more environment friendly is out of pure stupidity, people fighting in the middle-east is out of pure stupidity, The wars fought in the last 20 years were fought because of pure stupidity, the intolerance of other races, sexualities and religions is because of pure stupidity.

Somehow our mind gives us the idea (politicians stimulate this) that our own culture is superior to the cultures of others. We think that we somehow have the right to tell people in Africa how to live, That we somehow think we have the right to try and overpower regimes in which we have no business at all, That we somehow think that killing people so that in the end they can live under our standars is a good thing.

I already hear people scream ''but those people are poor blahblah morals BS blahblah''. No, we have made it this far without the help of others, our society is civilised because we built it bit by bit. That does not mean that we have to go to other countries and try to civilise them. Just giving money (like we do now) is useless because we totally reject the human part of this problem, which is that people need to adapt to the new system, grow into it. All we are doing now is skipping steps, and as you see, that technique fails.

We need to learn to mind our own business. We need to learn that our own culture is not superior to others. We need to learn to tolerate differences. And we need to learn that there is no value in trying to save every human being on this planet (especially not in the way we are doing it now).

We probably will solve the environmental issues, but I highly doubt the world will become one civilization.

I understand Azd's point about tolerance, and indeed we have come a long way, but we still need to go an even longer way to get to a perfect society.

I already get your point on how stupid humanity is. Now, to be back on topic... it actually WOULD be our business, because for all we know a war with Israel and Iran would trigger a third world war. Especially if that craphole Iran manages to create weapons of mass destruction.
