I know this is super old (like first-page old xD), but nobody answered it as far as I can see, so I'll explain. Swedish actually belongs to the North Germanic language family (which also includes Icelandic, Norwegian, Danish, and Faroese). These languages are all descended from Old Norse, the language of the Vikings. Finnish, on the other hand, is in the Finno-Ugric family of languages and, oddly enough, is more closely related to Hungarian (!). Strange, huh?
