I don't think it was offensive to the mentally disabled for two reasons: 1. Lauren would never allow that. You look at her other work, and yes there may be some innuendos from time to time, but she would never stand for a massive blow like that. Even if she isn't completely in charge of the show anymore. And 2. Was there any indication that it was a direct attack on the mentally disabled? No.
The major problem is that Derpy was very much a fanon character. She was developed to be this sweet, innocent little cross-eyed cutie. But, very much like when FiM reintroduced Luna (who the fans had also dubbed as a Twilight/Fluttershy hybrid), the fans were outraged that they turned Derpy into, for lack of a better term, and idiot. And even moreso, people who had heard her name before, Ditzy Doo, were insulted that the creators caved in and called her Derpy. I know both of these are true because I'm friends with two of these types of fans. But here's my say in the matter:
Hasbro never referred to Ditzy Doo as the cross-eyed pegasus. We only assumed that connection, but there was never any proof. So how can it be caving in if Hasbro didn't give her the original name in the first place, and in turn gave the fans what they wanted? I don't think that's the real question. The real question is why the fans did a complete 180 when they officially announced her name as Derpy. Well, here's what I think: It was just kinda glanced over and the people who loved Derpy wanted a Derpy episode. The people who had learned her name as Ditzy were outraged by her name suddenly being "changed" to Derpy. This is causing a major divide in the fans and it has to be brought to an end.
So what I propose is this. For those of you who think fanon > canon, feel free to make any alterations to background characters with no real backstories (Doctor Whooves, Vinyl Scratch, etc.) but don't get all butthurt when Hasbro makes something official. And for the people who think canon > fanon, relax and think before you complain. If you like canon over fanon, then this is now canon and you should be behind whatever the creators decide.
I have signed the petition to keep Derpy named Derpy. The reasons being, for those who called her Ditzy, don't you think it would be weird if her name switched... twice? And second, I really do love this character. I'm glad she's finally getting some real screen time. And it pains me to see the fans lash out against a decision that the creators thought their fans would squee at.
Well, that's my piece. Peace out.
