Some more photos are on. Still looks frightning thought. 38 dead already
Imagine storm surge 20 miles inland like with Katrina, but in NYC. It would be the worst natural disaster of the century.
Well, one of the worst anyway. It'd take a lot to get worse the the boxing day tsunami or the Japanese tsunami, earthquake and nuclear reactor explosions.

Still, though, that doesn't take away from the fact that this is a hugely devastating natural disaster. Heck, it's probably impacting the world economy because Wall Street has been closed for two days straight. It could easily be shut tomorrow, too. I hope everyone affected gets away from it safely.

Gah, another Halloween ruined. Stupid Mother Nature. *brandishes fist*

But in all sincerity, how terrible. I feel absolutely horrible for the people out on Staten Island and along the NJ coast. My fiance has been working with diaster relief (haven't seen him for a couple of days now) and he's sent me some photos - I knew it was going to be bad, but...gah.
:(

We were lucky - evacuated further inland before the storm hit, and aside from some basement flooding and some branches on the roof, I'm told our house is fine. No power though, and it's not expected to come back until next week (I'm at my boss's house now, leeching off his iphone wifi. joy.) .
Still, it could have been much worse.

It's been hard getting news from outside of the tri-state area. Does anyone know anything about the status of places outside of NJ/NY?

I really hope those people on the east coast of America are ok, and good luck to those people that are being hit by Sandy now. (This sandy person is a bit of a jerk)

I hope everyone affected by the storm is okay.
I'm kind of mad though...some people from Alabama (my home state) went up to help with relief efforts (even before Sandy hit) and NY and all the affected areas, but they turned them down since "they weren't Union workers". Now they want them back. I hope they go...but I find that quite offending.

Ok, Hurricane Sandy. lol Some people were calling her "Franken storm" because apparently in 1991 or somewhere among the 90's there was a storm that came and hit many. The media was saying that Hurricane Sandy would be like that storm, but it wasn't at all. In our state we completey dodged it somehow. Yes, a couple trees fell down and our city lost power for only a couple of hours. The news reporters were over doing it, b/c they claimed it would last from Tuesday into Thursday, but we only got it for a couple hours, atleast our town did.

Though New York got hit pretty bad. I heard that some hospitals got water in their electrical systems from the flood, so they had to evacuate a good amount of intensive care paitents to different hospitals. They were ok, thankfully.

I live in New York and we did get hit pretty hard. Luckily, I was alright and I didn't loose power but some people did in other parts of the city. Because of power outage, some of my family members had to stay at my apartment for a total of 5-6 days. The last ones left this morning, so thank goodness for peace and quite now. :nehneh: Also, I had a whole week off from school because of the hurricane. Unfornately, I was very sad to see that my favorite beach was destroyed in New Jersey, especially the beach house I recently went to back in August and the amusement park at the beach were destroyed too. :(
