I AM NOT A PIRATE!

I AM NOT A PIRATE!

Postby DGFone » October 8th, 2011, 10:09 pm

Although in this case, I certainly hoped that I was. Why?

Because I plugged in the brand-new TLK DVD into my computer's DVD drive, popped on the movie player, and expected the menu to play, nothing happened. After a short while a window popped up saying that the DVD was encrypted and therefore the program couldn't read it.

It took me half an hour to figure out how to get the DVD readable. And even now, it's buggy to the point of almost unusability. If I accidentally scroll the mouse-wheel (which happens a lot), the entire thing freezes and I have to start over.

So I have to ask you this, disk manufacturers: why do the honest customers have to get handicapped, just so that the people you want to stop, the pirates, have an even greater reason not to stop piracy. How many true customers did you convert to piracy after a DVD or Blue Ray they bought didn't work?

Encryption doesn't work, it only harms you. So why do you force this on us?

You make me sad.

It is encrypted so that they can at least try and stop piracy to some degree.
Also what software / hardware did you use? More often than not that is the problem with playing content, rather than the discs themselves...

SG: Why am I not surprised?

Flip: I've tried the default Totem media player - which can read DVDs, because I used it with my C&C The First Decade DVD, and it worked fine. With TLK, it didn't.

I then used VLC, which didn't work either. I figured out how to get Totem to work, sort of, and now I tried with VLC, it works too. Took me 30 minutes to get it to work.

But the main thing about is, pirates won't worry about having encryption worries. Real customers do.

Not necessarily true, new types of data encryption are always being developed, and sometimes it takes hackers a while to figure an easy way to beat it. Sure it does all get hacked eventually, but often pirates loose a lot as well (terrible picture / sound, loss of warranty, get caught and sued etc...) so it isn't like encryption is there just to annoy consumers, just an unfortunate side effect.
Unfortunately Disney are notorious for really pushing anti piracy on their stuff, you will also notice they are scarce in regard to what they distribute online even in legal download services.

Yeah, sound doesn't work with VLC... And with the other program, the mouse-wheel is the devil. But it at least runs, sort of...

Much worse than Blue Ray. If only I had a Blue Ray drive. :(
This is the DVD, for comparison: audio: stareo. Native resolution: 640 x 480 about? It's definitely smaller than 800 x 600.
