Character Description
Subiri was born in the Pride Lands. His parents had died when he was young, and so the only family he had was a lioness named Tazama, who he was only distantly related to. Without a proper family, or any friends, Subiri was lonely. It didn't help that he was rather disliked in the Pride Lands, and he couldn't see why.
Quite often, members from the Isu Keeney Pride visited the Pride Lands. Subiri was greatly interested in them, and would spend a lot of time watching them during their visits. Finally, when he was a teen, he asked to join them.
The Pridelanders warned the lions of the Isu Keeney Pride that Subiri was a troublemaker. They found this hard to believe, as he was so quiet and shy, so Subiri was allowed to leave the Pride Lands and join the Isu Keeney Pride. A few Pridelanders were quite happy to be rid of him.
Though he had finally become a part of the Isu Keeney Pride, Subiri still remained quiet and hardly interacted with any of the members. This continued until one day, while he was taking a stroll by himself, he heard what sounded like animals fighting. He quickly ran over to see what was happening, and saw a young lioness, about his age, guarding a dead animal and trying to fight back several hyenas. Subiri, recognizing the lioness as one from his pride, joined her, and together they were able to chase off the hyenas.
Subiri expected the lioness to be grateful, but instead she was hostile towards him, believing he was also trying to steal her prey. He quickly assured her that he wasn't, and helped her carry it back to the pride, on the way learning that she was Johari, daughter of Princess Tamura.
When they returned to the pride and explained what had happened, the story got slightly exaggerated, and Subiri was seen as a hero, which made him slightly uncomfortable, as he didn't like too much attention. Because of what had happened, Tamura and her mate Jua gave Subiri the role of Johari's bodyguard. Johari was outraged by this, because she wanted the pride to know she could be strong, and this showed her as being weak.
Both young lions weren't happy about Subiri's new role, but despite this, Subiri made sure to do his duty and protect Johari while she hunted or went anywhere that wasn't too close to the pride. At first Johari was annoyed, but she started talking to Subiri, and eventually discovered that he was more than the shy and quiet lion he appeared to be. Now that he had gotten to know her, Subiri started revealing his true personality; that he could actually be wild and fun, and shared her love of adventure. Johari and Subiri started becoming good friends, and had fun going on adventures together and getting into some dangerous situations, in which they always managed to escape unharmed. The Isu Keeney Pride finally understood what the Pridelanders had meant about Subiri being a troublemaker.
When Subiri heard of Lagiza, he did his best to protect Johari, never leaving her side. Johari found this a bit irritating, but Subiri still felt it was his duty to protect Johari, though her parents had mostly forgotten they had made him her bodyguard, especially after he had done rather the opposite when he and Johari would go on their adventures.
Over time, Subiri and Johari began to fall in love, and eventually became mates.
