Character Description

Kovu is the son of Zira and an unknown lion. He is a half brother to Nuka and Vitani. He is the future King of the Pride Lands due to his and Kiara's marriage. Kovu means "scar" in Kiswahili. He is voiced by Ryan O'Donohue as a cub and Jason Marsden as an adult.

We first meet Kovu as a young outlander cub when Kiara bumps into him. Initally, Kovu is quite aggressive towards Kiara. After the crocodile attack, Kovu starts to become friends with the Pridelander. That is until Zira (his mom) shows up and takes him away. The next time we see him, Zira has blackened his heart and filled him with hate. He is brainwashed into believing Simba should be killed and sets off on the task. Kovu then meets up with Kiara again with the intention of gaining Kiara's trust to get at Simba. When Simba meets Kovu, he is suspicious of the young adult straight away, but allows him to prove himself.

The next day, Kovu is about to attack Simba but Kiara arrives for her training. During the training, Kovu discovers what fun is and ends up liking it. He also finds out later that he loves Kiara, which changes his attitude. He no longer wants to kill Simba. When Zira learns of this, she ambushes Simba and Kovu gets the blame from Simba and is forced to exile. Kiara runs off to find Kovu and when they meet, there become truly in love. Kovu wants to run away from everything but Kiara convinces him to return in order the end the blood feud of the prides. Once they return, Kovu turns on his mother, Zira, standing on Simba's side. After Zira is killed, Simba sees Kovu is not lying and accepts him as the Prince of the Pridelands.
