Everyone knew about the King and Queen of the Pride Lands, Ahadi and Uru. And of the two princes, Mufasa and Taka, who were the latest born into a long line of noble kings and queens. And even some of the best huntresses of the lioness were well known by the kingdom. But everyone seemed to forget the organization behind the Pride Lands. The right hand man, or bird for that matter, of the King and Queen.. The Majordomo.
Majordomo was an important title to say the least. Who else would keep the king and queen organized? Who else would keep an eye on the cubs when the royals and the pride were out hunting. And who else would keep the herds in order? Certainly not the lions. Though brave, true, and strong, the lions, most domos admitted, were a bit disorganized. No, they needed help. And there was always a bird to help them.
Started back as far as anyone could remember, the Kings and Queens started ruling the Pride Lands. And just as far back, the original Queen had decided that she needed a helper, a adviser, and someone who would eventually turn into a best friend. It was then, as this Original Queen, was pondering this, she came across a baby bird. Normally lions would eat birds, an easy snack if given the chance... But this queen didn't... Couldn't... Something stopped her from eating that baby horn bill.
It was then the lioness picked the baby bird gently up by the feathers of his wing, between her now gentle teeth, and took it back to the Pride Lands. The Queen, good natured and caring, raised the horn bill along side her cubs, taught him to fly, educated him in matters of the Pride Lands... And by the time the bird was full grown, he was a good family friend of all the lions, and an intelligent addition to the Royal team.
The bird, though his name was lost in time, was the adviser to the royal lions... And with each generation to come, a bird, from the same family line as that original horn bill, would sit on the right shoulder of the king or queen; sharing their wisdom and skills of organization and rule.
And that's what brought it to this very moment. Ahadi, walking little Mufasa along with Uru, towards a low set tree near Pride Rock. Uru and Ahadi had a majordomo of their own, a beautiful purple horn bill friend. And she had been nesting an egg. But that day, Ahadi had heard word of the eggs hatching... And so he took Mufasa, his heir, to see the future Majordomo of the Pride Lands.
Approaching the nest, the current domo moved to a higher branch, and Mufasa propped his front forelegs up onto the next to get a better look.
"Careful dear..." Uru said softly, smiling as she looked into the nest.
Mufasa nodded, hardly hearing her as he was distracted by a little blue baby bird chirping before him in the nest. It was a pathetic little thing, really. All noisy and scruffy, feathers out at every which way, still a bit sticky from being inside the egg.
"Do I eat it?" Mufasa asked, quirking a brow curiously at the messy thing.
Ahadi chuckled. "Good heavens no, Mufasa." He said in a soft, but firm voice. "This here is Zazu... He will be your majordomo when you are king."
Mufasa smiled, excited by anything that was about his future life as king. "This little guy?" He asked curiously, hardly believing it.
"He may be small now." Zazu's mother said curtly. "But he will grow to be a great flyer... With a great mind."
Uru smiled at her friend, seeing the proud look in the mothers eyes. She then looked at Mufasa. "I'm sure you two will be great friends, one day."
Mufasa quirked a brow for a moment, but then smiled as the little thing already tried to hop up and fly. "Woah! Did you see that!" Mufasa said with a grin. "He wants to fly! first day out and he wants to fly! He's brave. It'll be good to have a friend who isn't a girl, or my stupid brother."
The parents said nothing, as Mufasa smiled at the bird, ranting on and on about their future ruling together. And though the little bird was still mute, sticky, and small, Mufasa could tell that he was listening, and understanding, everything he was saying.
