The Pride Lands were struggling... Not a dry season had been seen in years, and not another one like it would hole par until far into the future, during Scar's rein. And when the lands suffered from lack of rain the creatures did too. The herd thinned, and that began to effect the lions living in these once lush lands as well..
King Mohatu ruled during this time. A wise leader, fair and just, he rationed water and food... But the pride still struggled. And to make matters more difficult, his mate was pregnant. The queen was think from hunger as it was, and she had to support cubs... Ahadi did what he could to help her. Giving her his rations when she would accept them.
Eventually, the news came to him. His mate was in labor. He hurried to Pride Rock. Rifiki was inside with her, as the pride waited on the outside. Mohatu sat with them, knowing Rifiki was the best thing for her at that moment.
But what was meant to be a joyous day would end in sorrow. The queen would die in child birth... And all but one of the cubs survived... A little, weak thing of a female named Uru.
Devastated, Mohatu clung to the life of his daughter... Knowing that if she died, the last of his happiness would die along with her. But despite the odds, the struggles, and the many nights of little sleep, the cub would die.
Young Uru, despite a troubling birth, and an absence of a mother, would grow into a small, but strong cub. Mohatu loved his Uru with all his heart. The little brown lioness reminded him so much of his queen.... He spent as much time as he could with his daughter.
And Uru loved him in return. She would spend all day with him, following him wherever his kingly duties would take him, so long as it was safe of course. But a day would come where she finally took her first step towards independence.
She would meet a young rogue cub named Ahadi... He had lost his pride for reasons he would not explain, and stuck to the border of the Pride Lands.
Mohatu was protective of his daughter, of course... And for a while forbade her from seeing the young rogue. But after many times catching her sneaking off to give him scraps of food, or catching them at play, the king finally permitted the young rogue to stay in his lands, under the care of one of the lionesses.
And so Mohatu shared his daughter. The day would belong to the cubs play... But the mornings, and his favorite, the evenings belonged to him. Uru would come home every night, wedging herself between his foreleg and his head, and tell him her tails of adventure with Ahadi.
And though Mohatu missed the day time with his daughter, he could see that his daughter was very happy to have found a soul mate in this young lion. And her happiness was all that mattered to him.
