Are the hyenas villains?

They were his henchmen. They were doing their job, and they were doing it good. They were loyal to him, as he promised them food, and slightly better life. Still, their life WAS better under Scar's rule, as they could enter Pride Lands and share their lives with lions freely, which wasn't that way with Mufasa's reign. They didn't really have anything against Simba or any good character in particular (or at least it wasn't shown), they were just following Scar's orders. That makes no one good or bad. Their personalities didn't have much to do with it.

Well, their life was better under Scar's reign initially. After all, didn't they start complaining when the drought hit that life was better when Mufasa was king? The only reason Scar gave them a "better" life was because he allowed them the luxury of an unsustainable lifestyle. Finally when the land couldn't support them anymore, Scar didn't bother to change anything, compounding a bad situation into devastation.

^ True, but still. Maybe I wasn't precise enough. I said they were loyal. It's true their satisfaction failed with the way they were treated later, but their loyalty couldn't let them betray him. At least, not up till the end, when he betrayed them.

The life he offered them was true. Or at least, yeah, was in the beginning. Later on, there was no food at all on Pride Lands, not only for hyenas, but for anyone.
