I never saw it that way xD The movie came out when I was about five, so I didn't really know animals marked their territory like that. Also, I've always noticed those pawprints, so "marked" was literal to me. xD

The funny part is that I doubt that the SP team even knew about animal marking. I think the paw prints were in fact what they meant, much like us humans use established visual trails.
