When [[Simba]] was still a cub, they were ordered to chase after the herd of wildebeests, part of [[Scar]]'s plan for domination, unfortunately leading to [[Mufasa]]'s death. After Mufasa was killed, [[Scar]] wanted them to chase [[Simba]] down and kill him; the hyenas only go so far when [[Simba]] stumbled into a patch of thorns and managed to get out unharmed while [[Banzai]] accidentally fell into them. Shenzi was the one responsible for not killing [[Simba]], the whole plot may have changed if this had not happened.

[[Scar]] finally assumes the throne and the hyenas are treated with loads of food, as promised, until the bountiful meat had run scarce and water low. Shenzi tried to convince [[Scar]] to help them, but he sent them out when [[Banzai]] foolishly said '[[Mufasa]]'.

In the end scene where [[Simba]] is fighting [[Scar]],Shenzi and the hyenas are fighting with [[Scar]], but hearing him say it was the hyenas fault, the hyenas finally cornered [[Scar]] and (supposedly)ate him alive.

Sarabi is devastated after Mufasa's death, and is seen being comforted by [[Zazu]] and the pride when the news is broken. Later, she tells her brother-in-law, [[Scar]], the new king, that there's no prey left, and that they have to leave in order to survive, in which Scar replies "You're just not looking hard enough!". Sarabi says there is no other choice but to leave Pride Rock, otherwise they will die from starvation.
