'''Kingdom Hearts II''' featured the Pride Lands (プライド・ランド, Puraido Rando?), a savanna world based on Disney's thirty-second animated feature, ''[[The Lion King]]''. It was originally considered for inclusion in the first Kingdom Hearts but the game's engine could not correctly handle a quadripedal animal as the player, so it was moved to Kingdom Hearts II. After the death of the previous king, [[Mufasa]], his deceitful younger brother and killer, [[Scar]] took the throne. Since then, the Pridelands have seen a steady decline in living conditions, due to his poor rule. While in the Pridelands, Sora is transformed into a lion cub, Donald becomes a hornbill bird and Goofy takes the body of a tortoise.

==Plot==
The Pridelands are dominated by a large central savannah area which branches off in three directions. To the north is Pride Rock, home of the lions and the seat of the world's political power. The area southwest of the savannah is where outcasts from Pride Rock, such as the hyenas, live. The skeletons of several large elephants earns this area its nickname, the Elephant Graveyard. Southeast of the savannah are the Wastelands, an arid desert of little life. Beyond the Wastelands, however, is a lush oasis.

Sora and his friends arrive in a desolate area of the Pridelands. Traveling here, they fight off a group of Heartless and save a lioness named [[Nala]]. She explains that under the rule of the new king, [[Scar]], the quality of living has dropped drastically. After an unfortunate encounter with Scar and Pete, Sora is forced to flee [[Pride Rock]] with Nala. An idle comment by Nala leads to her revelation that [[Simba]], the son of the previous King [[Mufasa]] the brother that [[Scar]] murdered to become King, is still alive. Traveling to an oasis, Sora is reunited with his former comrade. When approached about the prospect of being the king of Pridelands, he is less than thrilled. That night, his father Mufasa appears to him in a vision and commands him to take his place in the Circle of Life. Emboldened, he joins Sora and returns to Pride Rock to confront Scar, who reveals that ''he'' killed [[Mufasa]], not [[Simba]]. He and Scar duel while Sora takes care of Scar's hyena lackeys. At the peak of [[Pride Rock]], Simba deals a finishing blow but Scar's dark heart transforms him into a Heartless. After a gruesome battle, Simba and Sora emerge victorious and Simba ascends the throne to take his father's place.

When Sora and company return, all is not well. It seems that Simba is plagued with doubt and haunted by mysterious ghosts resembling Scar. Sora encourages Simba to follow his own path, rather than trying to be his father. Rafiki, the king's advisor, gives Simba some ominous words and suggests he confront the hyenas at the [[Elephant Graveyard]]. After defeating them, Scar's ghost appears and Simba's resolve crumbles. Sora finds him at the oasis, disheartened. Through Sora's goading, Simba manages to defeat the ghost and regains his strength. Unfortunately, a large number of Scar ghosts coalesce into the powerful Groundshaker Heartless. Through the strength of their hearts, Simba and Sora defeat it, restoring peace to the Pridelands.

Simba (シンバ, Shinba?) is a lion who resides in the Pridelands. He is the son of [[Mufasa]], a former king of the Pridelands. His father was killed during a stampede caused by Simba's uncle, [[Mufasa]]'s wicked younger brother, [[Scar]], and Simba ran away from his home, believing his father's death was his fault. At that time, he met Timon and Pumbaa and became friends with them. With Sora's and Mufasa's help, he confronted and defeated Scar who had since become king. Thus, he became the new, rightful ruler of the Pride Lands. Besides his appearance in Kingdom Hearts II, he was also in Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories as a summonable ally. In Kingdom Hearts II, Simba can perform an earthquaking-scream attack with Sora by his side.

Sora (ソラ, Sora?) has his share of concerns, but overall, he manages to keep an upbeat attitude. He seems simple-minded at times but he has a strong sense of justice. He lives for the simple pleasures of life, enjoying things like sunsets and ice cream and loves his friends more than anything else. He'll even force himself to the limit to protect them from harm. Sora has always been very open with his emotions. He was the one who was chosen by the Keyblade to battle the Heartless. It was Sora who defeated Xehanort's Heartless (who called himself Ansem), ending his plan to shroud all worlds in darkness. However, Sora continued his journey, seeking Riku and the King, who were sealed behind the door to darkness. This journey took him to Castle Oblivion, when he thought that he was reunited with a friend named Naminé, but he was actually being used by Organization XIII. During Kingdom Hearts II, he searches for and eventually finds Riku and the King, and defeats Organization XIII.

Nala (ナラ, Nara?) is a female lion and a childhood friend of Simba's. Later on, the two are reunited in the jungle after Sora revealed to her that Simba was still alive. Nala is the mother of her and Simba's unborn child.

Mufasa (ムファサ, Mufasa?) was the former leader of the Pridelands. He also was the father of [[Simba]] but was killed during a wildebeest stampede caused by his brother [[Scar]]'s minions.

A ruthless lion and Mufasa's brother, Scar (スカー, Sukā?) controls a pack of hyenas who are his servants. In order to usurp the throne of the Pridelands, he killed Mufasa by causing a stampede. He also made an alliance with Pete in order to stop Simba and Sora from returning. He was defeated, but dark spectres resembling him later returned to prey on Simba's hesitance.

Shenzi, Banzai and Ed are the three most prominent hyenas who work for Scar, in the hope that they will get plenty of food while he is king of the Pridelands. They were the cause of the wildebeest stampede that killed Mufasa and were ordered to kill Simba. However, the lion cub escaped into the desert through a thorn bush before they could get him. The hyenas took it for granted that Simba would die in the desert.

Rafiki (ラフィキ, Rafiki?) is a wise old mandrill and advisor to the king of the Pridelands. He is also the one who judges young lions to see if they are worthy to become king. He eventually turns Simba back to his rightful path as king of the Pridelands.

Goofy (グーフィー, Gūfī?) is the captain of the Royal Knights of Disney Castle and a soldier who despises weapons, instead preferring a shield to use against his enemies. Under the king’s orders, he accompanies Donald on the quest to find the key. He is an easygoing, but clumsy knight whose endearing charm evokes smiles even in the worst of times. Although he seems not as bright as Sora or Donald, he can see things that others miss. In Kingdom Hearts 2, he is able to fuse with Sora for Sora's Valor Form, and later, along with Donald, his Master and Final Forms.

Donald Duck (ドナルドダック, Donarudo Dakku?) is the court wizard of Disney Castle and a loyal servant to King Mickey. He is a short-tempered, powerful magician on a quest to find King Mickey Mouse In Kingdom Hearts, he embarks on a journey to carry out the missing king’s orders to follow the Keyblade wielder. Donald finds a letter from the King explaining his departure. Donald Duck sets out with Goofy to find and assist the King in the battle against the Heartless. He is a feisty, impatient magician whose antics are a real highlight of Sora's story. Donald is one of Sora's two companions who go with him to every world.

This version of Donald, like the protagonist, Sora, undergoes several transformations, including an octopus style merman, an African bird with his coloring and head, and an armored virtual rendition. In the world "Halloween Town", it has been said that Donald takes the form of a mummy due to the numerous bandages he is wrapped in, but closer inspection will reveal that Donald is actually invisible in that world, and the bandages are used to show where he is. This can be proven by close inspection of his midriff (which appears black when looking from the front, but is really the player looking into the inside of the bandages around his lower body), and his right elbow, which when viewed properly will show to be invisible. In Kingdom Hearts 2, he is able to fuse with Sora for Sora's Wisdom form, and later, along with Goofy, his Master and Final Forms.

In Kingdom Hearts II, Pete (ピート, Pīto?) is one of the main villains Sora and his friends have to deal with. He was originally a Captain from the Disney Castle world, referring to Mickey as the "boat boy king", but was banished to another dimension for his evil ways. However, he is freed by Maleficent and vows to help her conquer the worlds, or as he says, "have her help me take over".

==Gameplay==

The game play is a little different from the rest of the game. It still uses the same controls, but instead of attacking the enemy's on the ground, most of the enemy's are in the air. Sora's jump is a great deal bigger then it is through the other levels. You can use Simba for some finishing attacks, mainly, especially throughout the first visit to the world. Simba can be an especially great help for the final boss of the realm, which he can often stun the boss, so you can climb up it's back and deal your blows.

[[Simba ]] takes his friend, [[Nala]], to the [[Elephant Graveyard|elephant graveyard]] , where the cubs are chased by [[Shenzi]], [[Banzai ]] and [[Ed]], [[Scar]]'s hyena minions, only to be rescued by [[Mufasa]]. [[Scar ]] becomes very angry as he intended for the hyenas to kill the cubs. Plotting further, [[Scar]] gathers more hyenas and buys their loyalty by claiming that if he were king they would never be without food. Later, [[Scar]] lures [[Simba]] into a gorge for a "surprise from his father," while the hyenas engineer a wildebeest stampede down into the gorge where [[Simba]] is. Alerted by an insincerely dramatic [[Scar]], [[Mufasa ]] races to rescue his son from the stampede, and after saving [[Simba]], [[Mufasa]] is killed by [[Scar]], who thwarts his attempted climb to safety over an edge of a cliff. [[Scar]] convinces [[Simba ]] that that he was responsible for his own father's death, and recommends that he flee from [[The Pridelands]], never to return. To compound this, [[Scar]] orders the hyenas to kill [[Simba]], but as [[Simba]] escape through a thorny embankment, the hyenas break off pursuit and let him get away, expecting him to perish in the desert, and hurling threats that he will be killed if ever seen again. [[Simba]] collapses in a distant desert, where he is found by [[Timon]], a meerkat, and [[Pumbaa]], a warthog, who adopt and raise [[Simba ]] under their carefree "[[Hakuna Matata]]" lifestyle. When [[Simba]] is grown, he is discovered by [[Nala]], who relays that [[Scar]]'s tyrannical reign has devastated [[The Pridelands]] by allowing the hyenas to hunt recklessly, a problem further compounded by a severe drought. She demands that [[Simba]] return to Pride Rock, but [[Simba]] refuses, still guilty about supposedly causing his father's death. However, after some advice from [[Rafiki]] and the ghost of his father, [[Simba]] returns home along with [[Timon]], [[Pumbaa]] and [[Nala]].

Once back at [[Pride Rock]], [[Simba]] confronts his uncle and the truth about [[Mufasa]]'s death is revealed by an overly confident [[Scar]]. A fierce battle breaks out between the lionesses, along with [[Timon]] and [[Pumbaa]], and the hyenas while [[Simba]] fights [[Scar]]. In the midst of their fight, [[Scar]] tries to surreptitiously blame everything on the [[hyenas]], but they overhear his conversation with [[Simba]]. The film's original motion picture soundtrack was released on July 13, 1994.

On February 28, 1995, Disney released an album entitled Rhythm of the Pride Lands, a sequel of sorts to the original soundtrack which featured songs and performances inspired by, but not featured in, the film. Most of the tracks were composed by African composer Lebo M and focused primarily on the African influences of the film's original music, with most songs being sung either partially or entirely in various African languages. Several songs featured in the album would later have incarnations in other The Lion King-oriented projects, such as the stage musical or the direct-to-video sequels (examples being "He Lives In You" used as the opening song for The Lion King II: Simba's Pride; and a reincarnation of "Warthog Rhapsody", called "That's All I Need", in The Lion King 1½. Rhythm of the Pride Lands was initially printed in a very limited quantity. However, it was re-released in 2003 and included in some international versions of The Lion King's special edition soundtrack with an additional track.

==Sequels and spin-offs==
The success of the film led to several spin-offs, its first being a 70mm film released in 1995 entitled ''Circle of Life: An Environmental Fable''. It promoted environmental friendliness and was shown in the Harvest Theater in The Land (Disney)at Epcot in Walt Disney World. Also debuted in 1995 was a spin-off television series called ''Timon & Pumbaa (TV series)'' which focused on the titular meerkat and warthog duo in a more modern, human world to the film's.

In addition, a direct-to-video sequel called ''The Lion King II: Simba's Pride'' was released in 1998, focusing on Simba's daughter Kiara. Finally, a direct-to-video, ''The Lion King 1½'' (also known as ''The Lion King 3: Hakuna Matata''), was released in 2004, showing the timeline of ''The Lion King'' from the perspective of Timon and Pumbaa.

Simba, Mufasa, Nala, Timon and Pumbaa were featured as guests in House of Mouse, and Banzai, Shenzi and Ed were part of the Disney villains in Mickey's House of Villains.

Simba, Timon, Pumbaa and Nala were featured in Mickey's Magical Christmas: Snowed in at the House of Mouse.

==Video games==
Two video games based on the film have been released. The first, entitled, ''The Lion King (video game)'', was published in 1994 by Virgin Group and was released on NES, SNES, Game Boy, Sega Master System, Sega Genesis, Game Gear, Personal computer and Amiga. The second, entitled ''The Lion King: Simba's Mighty Adventure'', was published in 2000 by Activision and was released on PlayStation and Game Boy Color.

In 1996, Disney Interactive and 7th Level released ''Timon & Pumbaa's Jungle Games'' for the PC. It was later seen on the SNES. Games include one where Pumbaa uses his gas to destroy fruits and bugs (and even a kitchen sink) that fall out of trees, a variation on a pinball game, a game where you use a peashooter to hit enemy creatures in the jungle, a game where Timon has to jump onto hippos over a river to deliver bugs to Pumbaa, and a variation on ''Tetris''.

A third game was published in 2004 simply called ''The Lion King'' for Game Boy Advance in Europe and Asia, but was in fact a game based on the direct-to-video prequel/midquel ''The Lion King 1½'' with Timon and Pumbaa as the playable characters.

Part of the main plot of ''The Lion King'' is retold in the 2005 Square Enix PlayStation 2 game ''Kingdom Hearts II''. The characters of the film appear in "Pride Land", one of the many Disney "worlds" in the game. The plot is altered and new dialogue was recorded to accommodate the presence of the three main protagonists (Sora, Donald Duck and Goofy). Simba also appears as a Summon and Summon Card in ''Kingdom Hearts'' and ''Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories'', respectively.

Scar is a Machiavellian individual who is mainly concerned with gaining power and will kill anyone he sees as competition. Despite his ruthless nature, he is a somewhat cowardly individual. He is more likely to run away from violence than confront it. When pressed though, he is portrayed as a fierce fighter who holds his own against [[Simba]] at the movie's climax.

Due to him being able to plot the murder of his own [[Mufasa|brother]] and nephew and execute said plot without little remorse, it could be said that he doesn't care much for family relations, however, not much is known about the relationship he had with Zira or any offspring they may have had before he died.

Scar's lyrics in the song [[Be Prepared]] ("''meticulous planning, tenacity spanning, decades of denial, is simply why I'll be King undisputed, respected, saluted and seen for the wonder I am''") and his inability to take criticism either from [[Shenzi]] or [[Sarabi]] establish him as being a narcissist.

==Backstory==

Scar's creators, as in the first ''The Lion King'' film's makers, have never revealed their official backstory and birth name for Scar. The only background story and birth name he has in the entity of the official The Lion King universe, is in the book universe but it was not created by Disney at all. It was written by Alex Simmons, who - according to his personal web site - isn't part of The Walt Disney Company, and the story is his original story based on the hit film. And thus, apart from publishing it, Disney has nothing to do with it except the film the story bases on. Scar's creators have even denied that story's main character, Kopa, from existing in their movie, and thus naturally also Scar's part from the novel is not in the backstory of the movie's Scar.

The novel series ''[[The Lion King: Six New Adventures]]'', visions that Scar's real name is Taka, which is Swahili for "dirt", "trash", or "want". In ''A Tale of Two Brothers'', one of the books in the set, teenage Taka is angry that [[Mufasa]] is chosen to be the heir to the throne. He gets even angrier when his father, King Ahadi, breaks his promise to go hunting with him, choosing to solve the drought problems in the Pride Lands instead. Taka wanders off to talk to Shenzi, Banzai, and Ed the hyenas, who tell him that if Mufasa were to be made to look like a failure to their father, [[Ahadi]], and the rest of their pride, then he, Taka, will look good in comparison and take the throne.

Taka then tricks his brother into going down to the waterhole, where a Cape buffalo named Boma is refusing to share the water. The Pride Lands is in a terrible drought and any water there is precious. Mufasa begins reasoning with Boma, when Taka roars and says that Boma must move by order of the Lion King, or Mufasa will face Boma in combat. Boma charges out of the water at Mufasa. Mufasa escapes to safety with Rafiki, but Boma says that his herd will get Taka. Mufasa runs back to find Taka being attacked by Boma's herd. The largest of the buffaloes slashes Taka with his horns, knocking him unconscious. Mufasa leaps in to save his brother and the buffaloes ready themselves to attack again.

Before they can do so, however, Ahadi appears with a large herd of animals. The herd surrounds the buffaloes and ends the fight. Later on, Rafiki examines Taka and finds a deep cut on his left eye, which will never fully heal. Taka then requests that he be called "Scar" from now on, as a reminder of how he foolishly allowed his anger to rule him.

==The Lion King==

Scar is the younger brother of Mufasa, the uncle of Simba, and second in line to the throne after Simba is born. Scar is jealous of Simba's position as the next king of the Pride Lands, so he plots to kill his brother and nephew, in order to seize the throne.

To carry out his plans, Scar recruits three spotted hyenas; Shenzi, Banzai and Ed — who gladly do his bidding in exchange for food. At first, there seem to be only three hyenas, but eventually it becomes apparent that he has influenced an entire army of them. Mufasa foils their first attempt to kill Simba, so Scar calls up his troops and promises that when he is king the hyenas will "never go hungry again".

With the help of the hyenas, Scar triggers a wildebeest stampede meant to kill both Simba and Mufasa. Mufasa manages to save his son, but is badly injured in the process and as he tries to escape by climbing up the gorge, Scar is waiting and grabs his paws. Maliciously taunting him with "Long live the king", Scar throws Mufasa from the cliff into the stampede, where he is trampled to death. Scar then makes Simba believe that the young prince caused the stampede (he had let out a loud yowl, while practicing roaring, seconds before the stampede began, and had not seen Scar throw his father to his death) and in turn killed Mufasa. Simba runs away, overwhelmed by guilt and fear. Scar then orders the hyenas to chase the cub and kill him. Unknown to Scar, however, the hyenas do not succeed because of a thorn bush, as Simba evades them and escapes into the desert. Scar then returns to Pride Rock and assumes the throne, letting the hyenas in the Pridelands and leading the pride to believe that both Mufasa and Simba died in the gorge.

During Scar's reign, the kingdom rapidly declines as droughts hit and food becomes scarce. Years later, to Scar's surprise, Simba returns to challenge his uncle for the throne. Scar forces Simba to reveal the "truth" about Mufasa's death and backs him towards the edge of Pride Rock's promontory. Scar taunts Simba by admitting that he killed Mufasa, and prepares to kill Simba before the rightful heir can tell anyone. As lightning starts a fire on to the parched plains, Simba leaps upon Scar and forces him to admit his guilt. A fierce battle ensues between Scar's hyenas and Simba's friends and family while Simba alone fights Scar.

Eventually, Simba traps Scar on Pride Rock's summit. Terrified, Scar pleads for his life, blaming his crimes on the hyenas; unaware that Shenzi, Banzai and Ed have followed him and can hear Scar's condemnation. Simba, not willing to sink to Scar's level, spares his uncle's life and banishes him from the Pride Lands. Believing that Simba would pull the same trick on him, Scar begins to walk off, but then suddenly flings some burning embers into Simba's eyes, temporarily blinding him. The battle continues, but after Scar leaps in to finish Simba, the younger lion finally defeats him by flipping Scar over the cliff where the hyenas are waiting.

The hyenas, determined to get revenge on Scar for denouncing them as "the enemy", surround their fallen leader. Scar, pleading for his life, tries to explain to the hyenas that he didn't really mean what he said about them, but his pleas fall upon deaf ears. Fueled with anger at Scar for his betrayal (as well as, presumably, hunger, from his broken promise of them never going hungry again), the hyenas leap upon Scar and begin to maul him alive shortly before they are all surrounded by the blazing flames.

==The Lion King II: Simba's Pride==

Scar does not return as the villain in the direct-to-video sequel The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride, but it is revealed that Scar had a group of lionesses loyal to him whom Simba exiled to the Outlands after he became king. They are led by Zira who is his mate and still fiercely loyal to him (their exact relationship is not clear, but implied to be romantic), who has three offspring: Nuka and Vitani, and, Kovu. In the film, Zira attempts to use Kovu, who was selected to be Scar's heir, to kill Simba and become king. Kovu, however, is not Scar's son, as he later explains to Kiara.

Scar only appears twice, the first time in Simba's nightmare. In the nightmare, Mufasa clings to the cliff above the stampede as in the first film, and Simba tries to reach down to help his father. However, Scar appears on the ledge and grabs Simba's paws, preventing him from reaching Mufasa. Scar laughs, suggesting Simba trust him and let Mufasa fall. Mufasa falls into the stampede and the cackling Scar morphs into Kovu. Kovu flashes an evil grin and throws Simba into the stampede, as Scar had done to Mufasa in the first film. He appears again when Simba banishes Kovu from the Pride Lands. As Kovu looks into a stream, he sees Scar's reflection rather than his own. Given that Kovu had rejected defending his legacy, the young lion flees the vision in panic.

==In the Broadway Musical==
In the Broadway musical based on the original film, Scar is portrayed by a human actor in an African-style costume with a lion-face headpiece that comes down over the actor's face using a hidden remote control. Scar also uses a cane. Scar was originally portrayed in the Broadway production by [[John Vickery]], and is currently played by [[Patrick Page]]. [[Dan Donohue]] portrays this character on the Broadway tour.

Scar's role is expanded upon with the song "[[The Madness of King Scar]]." In it, Scar begins doubting his reign, fearing that he might be losing the respect of the lionesses and that he needs a queen. He tries to seduce Nala, who rebukes him by scratching his face.

In the direct-to-video "midquel" ''The Lion King 1½'' (2004), Scar makes a few brief, non-speaking appearances in the scenes for which he was present in the original film. However, his role as the villain was taken by Shenzi, Banzai and Ed.

==Scar in Kingdom Hearts II==
Besides appearing in various The Lion King video games, Scar (スカル, Sukāru?) also appears in the Disney and Square Enix game Kingdom Hearts II as the primary villain of the Pride Lands world, voiced by James Horan. Much like in the film, Scar murders Mufasa to become king, and under his reign the Pride Lands suffers a drought and food becomes scarce.

Prior to the game's main protagonists' (Sora, Donald Duck, and Goofy) arrival at the Pride Lands, Pete (in the form of a lion) offers Scar use of the Heartless to maintain his hold on the throne. Sora (in the form of a lion cub, a change brought on by his magical clothes) attempts to confront Scar in order to save the world, but is turned down by Rafiki due to the latter's prophecy. Soon afterwards, they are confronted by Scar. Scar attempts to persuade the lionesses to hunt and kill Sora, Donald, and Goofy and nearly attacks them, but is pinned down by Nala in order to allow Sora and friends some time to escape. Later, Sora locates Simba and brings him back to the Pride Lands so he can challenge his uncle for the throne. The confrontation between Scar and Simba that follows is almost identical to that in the original film, the only noteworthy exceptions being no hyenas for most of it and Sora and his group replacing the lionesses. Sora's group saves Timon and Pumbaa from Shenzi, Banzai and Ed, while Scar and Simba fight. As in the film, Simba eventually triumphs over his uncle; even though Donald initially wants to help him, Sora prevents him from doing so, believing that it is Simba's fight, and they should not interfere.

Thinking that Scar is defeated, the protagonists are surprised when, as Pete explains, Scar returns to fight once again as a Heartless. Scar's anger and jealousy were so strong they lingered after death and consumed him. During the fight, Scar uses a series of swift and strong physical attacks and powerful magic against Sora and company. Sora and his friends defeat Scar again.

Scar is the only character in the ''Kingdom Hearts'' universe - excluding Xehanort - to keep his original form as a Heartless. Whether or not, a Nobody will be fleshed out in ''Kingdom Hearts'' continuity is debated.

By the time Sora returns to the Pride Lands to see how Simba's faring, rumors of Scar's ghost haunting the Pride Lands have driven Simba into doubt. But once he overcomes this problem, the "ghost" is revealed to be the interaction of Simba's lack of confidence and Scar's spirit. Multiple copies of Scar's "ghost" then combine to form a gigantic Heartless that is eventually killed by Simba and Sora.

==Scar in Relation to Adolf Hitler and King Claudius==
Scar is most likely based off the villain from the Shakespeare's play "Hamlet," King Claudius, and the real-life dictator Adolf Hitler. In the song [[Be Prepared]], in which Scar sings to the Hyenas about how he will kill Mufasa and become King, there is a scene where Scar sits on a high up rock, watching the Hyenas march along. This is very similar to a video of Hitler, watching the Nazis march along.

In the play "Hamlet," Claudius poisoned the old king in his sleep in order to take both the throne and queen, whereas Scar murdered [[Mufasa]] in order to become king, but not necessarily have [[Sarabi]] or any of the other lionesses. However, in the Broadway version of ''The Lion King'', Scar tries to seduce [[Nala]].

In [[The Lion King]] Mufasa is the King of [[the Pridelands]]. At the beginning of the film, the presentation of his newborn son, [[Simba]] is shown. A short time afterwards, Simba wakes up Mufasa early in the morning, due to a promise Mufasa made to him prior to the events. Mufasa show's Simba the pridelands, and tells him that he too will be king of the pridelands someday, but to stay away from the Elephant Graveyard.

Simba, being a curious Cub decides to venture off into the Elephant Graveyard with [[Nala]], after distracting Zazu. But soon Zazu catches up with them, but the Hyena's show up at the same time. They then attempt to roast Zazu in the ''"birdie boiler"''. Simba then confronts the Hyena's, but the plan backfires, and they try to attack him. But before they could, Mufasa shows off, and forces them to run away.

Mufasa then asks Zazu to take Nala home, while he talks to Simba. He tells him that the Great Kings of the Past are always looking down on them, and one day he will be the future king, and Mufasa will be part of the Great Kings of the Past.

Right after, they Hyena's tell Scar they couldn't get rid of Simba. So he devises a plan: to kill Mufasa.

==Death==

Scar has the hyena's scare a large group of Wildebeast, in order to start a stampede. Simba attemps to run away from this invasion, but is very close to meeting his demise as well. He hangs onto a small branch right above the wildebeast, where [[Zazu]] then alerts Mufasa of what is happening. Mufasa arives at the situation, and grabs Simba with his mouth. He is attacked in the side by a wildebeast, but is still able to reach the ledge just in time to get Simba safe from harm. Mufasa is then carried off into the stampede, but jumps up, attempting to climb the ledge. When he gets towards the top he pleads for [[Scar]]'s help. Scar then proceeds to pierce Mufasa's paws with his own claws, and then whispers in his ear, "Long live the king." Scar then throws Mufasa into the stampede.

A litte bit after the events of Mufasa's death, Simba attempts to find out whether or not he had survived the stampede. He then discovers Mufasa's body, and cuddles up with him, and starts to cry into his stomach.

After his death, Mufasa is seen again when [[Rafiki]] explains to Simba that 'He lives in you'. Mufasa, who's spirit is in the clouds, tells Simba that he must return to the Pridelands to save his pride. Also, before Simba claims his kingship, Mufasa can be heard saying "''Remember''".

==The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride==

Mufasa only makes two appearances in Simba's Pride. Once during [[Kiara]]'s presentation, and the last time in Simba's nightmare. He also says "Well done my son. We are one." at the end of Simba's pride. He is also mentioned during the exile of [[Kovu]], where Kiara yells at Simba "''You will never be Mufasa!''", possibly referring to the fact, in Kiara's eyes, Mufasa may have forgiven Kovu and seen the ambush was not his fault. Simba is taken aback by the statement for a moment, suggesting he had been trying to live up to the "greatness" Mufasa had achieved in his time as ruler of the Pridelands.

Once Nala is fed up with Simba's antics, she decides to play with Tama instead in a hidden valley. Simba hears this and follows the cubs, unbeknowest to them. He later gets in trouble with a couple of snakes. Tama and Nala hear his cries and come to rescue him.

The cubs jump onto a tree and bend it so Simba can jump up with him. They later escape the snakes with the help of [[Zazu]]. Tama has a confident personality and seems to not like Simba, calling him names and cursing him.

In the end she is the only one left standing in her meaningless alliance to Scar and tries to kill Simba in front of everyone. She dies without redemption or regret except for herself and Scar. When Nuka was in his dying breaths she soothed him and showed genuine grief once he died.

Kovu becomes affectionate with Simba's daughter Kiara after the two cubs escape from crocodiles on the Outland borders. Simba and Zira clash over this, but the two leave without fighting. Zira plots to train Kovu so he can easily kill Simba at the right moment (the "My Lullaby" song scene). Kovu was to save Kiara from a fire (of Nuka and Vitani's own making) so he could get closer to her and in turn, Simba. Then, when Simba was alone, Kovu would kill him.

The plan starts well, but [[Kiara]] and Kovu fall in love, which causes Zira to plan an ambush on Simba and Kovu while the two lions are out walking. Simba falls into a gorge during the ensuing fight, but escapes via a log dam piled up against one end of the gorge. The logs fall and crush Nuka, killing him. Zira pauses to mourn her son's demise, but quickly takes out her anger on Kovu, giving him a scar identical to Scar's. Kovu, defiant for the first time, flees for the Pride Lands as Zira declares war on Simba.

Zira rallies her lionesses and they travel to the Pride Lands for the final battle. At the battle's climax, Simba and Zira are about to fight each other when Kiara and Kovu intervene and stop the battle before it can begin, convincing the Outsiders and the Pridelanders that "they are one." Zira, having rejected aid, slips and falls into the river below and drowns.

Surprisingly, a suicide theme was used later in the 2004 Disney/Pixar film The Incredibles (however in this case it should be considered that the person wished to end his life due to emotional stress while Zira's act was a gesture of spite, as well as the fact the suicidal man in The Incredibles was a very minor character, seen twice, and Zira was a major character throughout the second Lion King film).
