In the musical, the instrumental initiates when Scar confesses to murduring Mufasa, the former king of the Pride Lands. And it finishes when Simba corners Scar on the ledge of Pride Rock. (In contrast to the movie, when Simba chases Scar to the top of Pride Rock.) During this powerful, and majestic instrumental, the audience watches as the lionesses, Timon and Pumbaa, Zazu, and Rafiki fight with the hyenas. In the background of the fight lightning can be seen, and thunder can be heard, and smoke and a spark of fire can be seen on the stage.

In the movie, The Lion King, Scar leads Simba into a gorge, and tells him to wait on a rock because his father has a marvalous surprise for him. He then tells Simba that he should practice his roar. He then leaves Simba, and gives his hyena henchmen Shenzi, Banzai, and Ed to startle the herd of wilderbeest. Later, Simba is seen trying to scare a chameleon by roaring, and he succeeds. Which at that point a stampede starts. And Simba attempts to run from the herd of wilderbeest. Meanwhile, Scar alerts Mufasa that Simba is trapped in the stampede. Later, Mufasa saves Simba from the stampede, falls into the chaos, and jumps onto a cliff face where he is thrown off by his younger brother Scar.

In the broadway musical adaptation of The Lion King, it's the same situation but a little different. First, a cheetah is seen gracefully walking while he stalks a giraffe. Then the stampede scenario takes place. And finally concludes when Simba mourns over his father's lifeless body, and Scar exiles Simba from the Pridelands.

The score can be heard on track 9 in The Lion King Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, and is labeled as "To Die For". Track 8 in The Lion King Original Broadway Cast Recording labeled "The Stampede". And track 11 in The Lion King Complete Score labeled "The Stampede".
