How Would the Pride Lands Monarchy Come to an End?

How Would the Pride Lands Monarchy Come to an End?

Postby SimbaKovu » March 23rd, 2016, 2:06 am

This is a topic I had previously grappled with when I was more active on these types of forums, but have not given any thought to until fairly recently. I've always envisioned Kiara implementing a series of democratic reforms with the ultimate goal of establishing a constitutional monarchy, and then getting into an intense power struggle with Vitani, who would by then have become a major figure in the democratic arm of the Pride Lands government. I could expound on this theory a little bit more if you all are so inclined to hear.

What do you guys think?

I don't see this ever happening, but it would be fairly interesting to see.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Pride Lands would have a long process of reducing power to the monarchy until it would get to the point similar to the British monarchy today is - power in name only. That being said, I doubt that such a change would be so rapid as you are describing. For an old and established system, such sudden change could easily cause loads of unintended problems, simply due to such changes being so different and sudden compared to the norm.

After all, historically speaking, a vast majority of monarchies did not end peacefully, and of those who did, or let their power dwindle over to more democratic systems - like the British - often the process was long, and it too was often riddled with war and violence. War of the Roses anyone?

But come to think of it, The Lion King is never specified as to what time period its set in, so it could easily be in the distant past. A more recent Disney movie shows how animals that can communicate with each other would live like in a modern world. So: TLK = ancient history. Zootpoia = now. #illuminati confirmed.

My concept was that some sort of corruption scandal involving Simba's associates (but not necessarily Simba himself) underlined the need for some sort of reforms. In my view, Kiara would have implemented some mode of political reforms, such as establishing a legislative body that she appointed, a High Court to make sure that body's decisions comported with the common-law precedent set by prior royal edicts, and then after tinkering with those bodies for a certain period of time, would have simply thrown her hands up and called for elections to a constituent assembly to write a new constitution. In my view, Vitani would have emerged as a major reformist voice and would have played a major role in de-legitimizing the rule of the Throne.

Well, I'd rather think of a sort of revolution brought by the "lesser" animals.

My point is, these animals are being constantly eaten by the lions, say zebras, hippos, rhinos, elephants, wildebeests and so on join their forces to overthrown them because they're fed up of being abused and killed, so I just picture it like one day they won't stand it and do something about it.

Guess if there were a "democratic goverment" after the lions are brought down, it would be one made from animals of all kinds rather.

I've envisioned Jasiri becoming a Nelson Mandela-type figure within the Pride Lands who was constantly being arrested and persecuted for her "radical" ideals and who lead a movement of sorts against the policy of isolating hyenas into their own neglected enclave. Kiara, at the behest of Kion, would likely be more open to negotiations with her and her followers.

This is the true answer 8-)

If they could coordinate enough to overthrow the monarchy (Probably with the help of some disgruntled lions)... but since they are likely selfish & arrogant...
They would fight among themselves and create a power sink in the pridelands.

I don't see Jasiri as being charismatic enough like Nelson to lead a movement. And who would listen to some blundering outlander? She seemed to be alone and without a powerful clan to back her up.

What makes you think a 'Democratic Republic' would be the outcome of overthrowing the Pride Land Monarchy? For all you know, the ultimate goal of the coup d'etat is to create a republic dictatorship? 8-)

As for Kiara... I doubt she would do much to rock the boat and just keep status quo like her father did by following the stuff mentioned in 'Duties of a King' song. Change wouldn't start with Kiara, but maybe down her lineage...

In my scenario, once Kiara and Vitani finalize a deal to do away with all remaining royal bodies and adopt a full-fledged constitutional monarchy, there is a sudden royalist coup attempt which seeks to install Kion as King. When he not only refuses but joins Vitani's military campaign to retake Pride Rock, that is considered to be the turning point against the coup, which disintegrates shortly thereafter with its leaders peacefully surrendering. Subsequent to this, once Kiara fails to appear with Vitani atop Pride Rock after being reinstalled, that is what ultimately gives Vitani the public legitimacy to assert herself as the new leader of the Pride Lands and push forward with not only a constitutional monarchy, but a complete abolition of the monarchy.

I'm curious though. Maybe it is just me, but it has been on my mind since Lion Guard began; I just don't see Kiara as fit to rule the kingdom. Even from the perspective of Simba's Pride I never saw Kiara having the real ability to rule a kingdom. It seemed to me that Kovu would fill that role. Anyway back to what I was originally saying is that it seems to me that if Kion was given any opportunity to take the crown I honestly feel he would. Especially if Kiara was trying to reduce the power of the pride down to a democratic state.

The idea of Democracy in a setting such as the Pride Lands doesn't make much sense. Without the current government structure that is set up, assuming a democratic state was formed, over population would begin to form. Nothing would get done as the other animals would be fighting over government policy, and just a whole lot of unnecessary bickering. It seemed to me that under Scars rule everything was left up to the people as Scar literally did nothing but sit on his butt. Sure he was the "King" but he didnt do anything but demand respect. Leaving everything up to the animals in a democratic state in the sense of the Pride Lands I think would literally bring the end of the Pride Lands.
