Pearl Mellark

After the boy tribute - John, I think his name was - was picked, the Peacekeepers ushered us into the Justice Building. As we passed one of the rooms, I caught a quick glimpse of the boy from 11 being picked. The poor kid. I hoped he was smarter and stronger than he looked, for his own sake.

It was only five seconds after I walked into my room when my mom and PJ came running in, hugging me.

"Be careful out there, Pearl," she said. "Be careful who you trust, watch your back, and watch your step. You never know what can happen in the arena." I nodded.

"Come back, Pearl," PJ begged.

"I'll try," I said. "But if I don't, take care of Mom for me." He nodded.

"Time's up!" The Peacekeeper said.

"Already?" my mom asked.

"Yes. Things are a bit stricter this year, as you would probably know, Ms. Mellark," he said. She nodded and grabbed PJ's hand.

"Good luck, Pearl," she said just before the door closed. I sat on the couch and waited for the next person, or people, I should say, because Melissa and Kayla came in together.

"How did you know?" Kayla asked.

"I'm a Mellark. My mom and dad had a big part in the ending of the Games over twenty years ago. I knew they were going to throw me in," I said. Melissa nodded solemnly, understanding what I was saying. Kayla didn't quite understand, but I figured she would ask Melissa later.

"Good luck out there then," Kayla said, hugging me. Melissa joined in the hug, and I hugged them both back. "Here. I want you to have this." She took out a bright orange bow and placed it in my hair. "Don't forget about us."

"I don't think that's possible," I said, hugging them again just as the door opened. "Bye."

"Good luck, Pearl," they both said. "We'll be watching." I smiled, glad to know that some people actually would see how I was doing, instead of just being entertained by it.

(Love triangles can be fun =D What were you thinking?)

Theo

Theo was stood at the front of the District and felt like he had lost the ability to speak. They called out the female tribute who was a mere 12 year old so Theo felt a pang of sympathy for the poor family losing her. Theo was 15, but felt so much older than her as she stood next to him. He gave her a look of pity before they were both ushered off to say farewell to their families by the peace keepers.

Theo's family embraced him for what they thought was going to be the last time. None of them apparently had any faith in him aside his younger brother who hugged him tightly and said;

"See you when you get back brother"

Theo watched as they were dragged away, his heart falling as he too thought he would never see them again. So much for his fathers lecture of 'You are unlikely to get picked so don't worry about it'

******

District 10, 9 and 8 were reaped the next day. None of the tributes particularly stood out to Theo, Ryan or Amber but the main worry for everyone was the reaping for 1 and 2. They were the richest of the districts and often trained the kids before they went into the arena. Today they were to see 7, 6 and 5 reaped and tomorrow 4-1. Ryan was getting more and more nervous about the reaping, but Amber was shaking with excitement.

(I was thinking there would be a boy in 12 that Pearl had a crush on, but the boy never knew. And then, in the Games, one of the tributes (I was thinking either Gabriel or Ryan) likes Pearl, but she doesn't feel the same about him during that time because of her feelings for the boy in 12. What do you think?)

Gabriel Seif

There had been no other tributes who I really had my eye on after Pearl. But now today was my district's Reaping Day. I walked into the square wearing some semi-formal clothes. I didn't have any suits, but I did have a gray vest, so I wore that with a white undershirt underneath and the nicest pair of jeans I could find that weren't torn up from the trees.

The lady who was to be our escort wore a brown dress that resembled bark, and her curly hair was green, resembling the leaves. I wondered if that was her choice or if she was forced to wear that, since our district was known for the lumber. Either way, it looked hideous on her, and it would probably look horrible on anyone who wore it. She went through the normal speech and then called the girl tribute's name. When she stood on the stage, she looked extremely frail, and she was crying. Unless she got some pretty good training, I didn't think she would last very long. Then the escort picked out the boy tribute's slip and read off the name.

"Gabriel Seif!" she announced. It didn't surprise me, and I'm not quite sure why. Maybe because I had been planning to go in anyways. I walked up onto the stage and watched everyone take a good look at us before we were ushered into the Justice Building.

(Could do. I was going to have Ryan protect Pearl when she goes in as he doesn't think it's fair on her to be in there and he will more than likely end up falling for her whether she returns his affection or not. Or maybe we could have a triangle with Pearl, Ryan and Gabriel? =P I don't mind. Those sorta plots are amusing and fun to write. Sorry for late reply by the way. I have been working ALOT the last two days D: This may be a longish one)

Ryan and Amber

The day after it was the turn of District 2. Amber was full of the joys of Spring, ready and willing to enter the games where as Ryan was slightly scared. But at the same time he also felt ready if he were to be called up. Amber was wearing a smart top and black trousers as she wasn't one for dresses, whereas Ryan had gone in his normal clothes, too poor to afford any others.

Amber stood in amongst a group of girls who were giggling at her for not wearing a dress, but she was too proud to even notice, whereas Ryan was standing in the back row of the boys group, apparently too embarrassing to be shown on TV in the event the camera passed over them.

"Welcome! District 2 to your reaping ceremony. You know the drill of course, let us hope our tributes bring honor to our District, just like in the old days!" The woman from the front of the stage called out, her voice echoing all around. This one was clad all in pink, had straight hair, a peach hat and was slightly fat. To Ryan she reminded him of a cake.

"Ladies first for this one!" She said, lifting a piece of paper daintily out of the glass bowl.

"AMBER MILEHAM!" She beamed.

Amber's reaction wasn't one anyone expected. She leapt for joy, air punched the air and pretty much full on ran to the stage. There was a murmer of confusion at her reaction to the reaping, but she was oblivious to it as she looked out at the many faces in the district. Ryan looked at her closely, she sure was a confident one.. perhaps even a little too confident for his liking.

"Well done dear, and such enthusiasm! The Capitol are going to like you!" The woman said, shaking Amber by the shoulder.

Silence returned to the district as she turned to the next bowl of papers. Ryan watched on as it all seemed to go in slow motion. Before long though she was calling out the boys name.

"THOMAS JONES!" She yelled out.

Ryan's head snapped round as he heard a loud wail behind him. The boys name who had been called was a young boy, only twelve. He grit his teeth as he then saw that the boy was blind. He would be a sitting target out there. The boys brother and sister hugged him tightly as if not wanting them to take him away, but this only caused the woman to call his name yet again and ask where he was. Tears streamed down Thomas' face and his siblings now wept too. Ryan cracked his knuckles and took a deep breath. He wasn't going to stand by and let this happen, though everyone else seemed to be happy to do so.

Ryan stepped out onto the path leading to the stage.

"You are Thomas?" The woman called down her microphone.

"No. But I volunteer as the male tribute of District 2" Ryan called back.

The murmuring started again and Ryan felt all the eyes on him, trying his best to ignore them and instead stare the peacekeeper down in-front of him.

"I see! Very well then boy, come on up here!" She beamed, Amber craning her neck to try and get a glimpse of Ryan before he got to the stage.

As he walked Ryan felt his legs shaking slightly, the eyes and heads followed him as he went and the mother of the child who had been chosen originally had come out to shout her thanks to him which Ryan tried his hardest to smile back to, but now he felt like a fool. He had just volunteered himself to enter a bloodbath. Still... he would rather of helped that boy that just stand by and do nothing. Once he was on the stage the lady doing the reaping turned to him and asked his name.

"Ryan Michaelis" He said timidly down the microphone, not used to all this attention.

"Let's hear it for our tributed! Amber Mileham! And Ryan Michaelis! Good luck and may the odds... be ever in your favour!"

(No problem. At least you have a better excuse than I do. =P And I like the idea of it being Ryan, Pearl, and Gabriel. =) Saves me from creating a whole new character. xD So I'll just go with that one.)

Pearl Mellark

I sat on the train, bored out of my mind. John barely talked to me, and when he did, it was to ask for something or just to say hi. I didn't care, though. Although it would be nice if someone would just talk to me. Every now and then, I would watch the TV and see the reapings from the other districts, getting a good idea of who I was dealing with. The girl from 2 looked way too confident, but that was one of the traits of Districts 1, 2, and 4, and that's why they had had the most victors. I liked how brave the boy from 2 had been to volunteer. Of course, most of the kids in those districts were like that, but he didn't quite seem like it. I was glad that other boy didn't go in, though. I didn't want to run into him at the Games and have to kill him. That would have been way too hard.

"How much longer, Malinda?" I asked our escort.

"Not long," Malinda replied. "I would say less than twelve hours before we arrive." I nodded, and stared outside of the window again. This train was way too slow for my liking. Not that I wanted to get right into the Games as fast as I could, but I wanted to have something fun going on.

Ricella Burns

Reaping Day for District 1 was finally here. I wore plain clothes, not caring what people thought. I never liked dresses. They were too pretty for my liking. Ii waited for the reaping to start, a little impatient as I waited for everyone to file in. Finally, everyone was in the square, and our escort came up to the podium and began the ordeal.

"Ladies first!" she chimed, and grabbed a slip from the bowl before reading it. "Ricella Burns." I smiled. I always enjoyed learning about the Games, and now I was finally going into them! Good-bye, District 1, hello, victory!

Ryan and Amber

"I can't wait till we reach the capitol! I can't wait to start training. This is going to be, the best experience of my life!" Was all that Ryan could hear out of Amber's mouth for most of the train journey so far.

He sat with his head resting against the window, deep in thought and far away from the District he had grown up in. He was thinking of the reaping and why he had volunteered. Seeing the way that boys family reacted had made him realize... Nobody would weep for him if he were to die in the games, whereas the boys whole family would be mortified. The thought saddened him, but he knew he had done the right thing. The fact nobody else had volunteered shocked him. Usually alot of the kids from the District were ready to go into the games whenever, but he supposed volunteering was different from actually being picked. Perhaps they felt it beneath them?

Whatever the case, Ryan was here now and on his way to his supposed death. Amber's cheery attitude towards it all was already getting on his nerves. She had been trying to make conversation with him, but Ryan was not in the mood for talking about strategy.

"We will be arriving in a few hours so if you'd like to get some rest... I would" Their escort called into the carriage.

"I am far too excited to sleep" Amber replied, pacing up and down.

"Well.. you will have a busy evening so best make sure you do get atleast some rest dear" The lady said.

Amber just shook her head, but Ryan grabbed a pillow and lay down next to the window. Atleast if he looked like he was asleep, Amber wouldn't try speaking to him.

********

Theo

Theo and the girl tribute from District 11 both sat on the train in total silence, both unsure of what to say to each other. Neither had expected to be here and both were already feeling homesick, despite the escort trying to make them both feel a bit happier. She'd offered them cake, sweets and even milkshakes, but neither were interested.

Theo just looked out at the rolling scenery, wondering if he would ever be coming back again.

Gabriel Seif

I laid down on my bed in my room on the train, looking up at the ceiling and thinking of some strategies for the Games. I was going to get Pearl to be my ally, even if I had to prove myself. Someone like her didn't deserve to be thrown into the Games, especially after everything her family had been through. I couldn't plan much of what I would do once I got there, though, because I didn't know yet what the arena looked like. I might grab something off of the ground before dashing off in the distance. I was a fast runner, but that was only in sprinting. I could probably make it to the Cornucopia, but that was it. After that, one of the tributes would kill me. It didn't matter what I tried. I wasn't quite skilled with the weapons, and although I would be training, I didn't think that would help me very much when I made the price of running into the Cornucopia where all of the stronger tributes would be. I just hoped that there would be something useful near my pod when we entered the arena so I could grab it quickly and take off.

A knock on the door brought me out of my thoughts. I sat up on the bed and called "Come in!" Our escort did. She was wearing all blue now, including her makeup and her hair. It was a horrible color for people to wear if you ask me. Don't get me wrong; I have nothing against the color blue. In fact, it's my favorite color. It just doesn't look good as makeup and ahair color.

"Dinner's ready. Do you want to come out?" she asked. I looked out the window to see the sun setting, making the sky orange. I hadn't eaten anything since breakfast that morning, and I was feeling it now. I had already skipped lunch, and I wasn't about to miss another meal. I had to keep up my strength for the Games.

"Sure," I said, swinging my legs off of the bed and standing up. Our escort had left by then. I quickly combed my haif so it wasn't sticking up every which way before walking out to the dining car. Felicia, the girl tribute, was already eating. She gave me a faint smile when she saw me, and I smiled back at her. Grabbing a bowl, I filled it up with stew and made a cup of coffee. I sat down across from Felicia, but didn't say anything. Instead, I just took a sip of my coffee before starting to eat the stew.

Ryan and Amber

"You'll need to come up with some sort of battle plan the pair of you. After all, this year there are allowed to be up to eight victors" The escort told them over the dinner table.

Amber nodded enthusiastically, but Ryan just stared into space, stabbing the potato on his plate repeatedly with a fork. He had eaten about half his meal and felt full up already. His stomach was used to being starved so much that it had probably shrunk. Amber however had polished off her entire meal and was stuffing her face with bread rolls now.

"I know who i'll be killing first! And heck, I'll kill tributes even when there are only eight of us left. Less trouble for Ryan and I from the Game makers" Amber said harshly.

"Have you ever killed someone?" Ryan near on snapped at her.

"No.. But I can fight! How hard can it be to use a live person as a target. In these games, you have to be strong. Block out all that and just... Hunt, or be hunted" Amber replied in a matter of fact sort of tone which just angered Ryan further.

He grit his teeth and took another violent stab at the potato before his answer. Ryan had decided to change tactics this time.

"An over confident head like that will get you killed in the games" He said bluntly.

"And a weak attitude like that won't?!" Amber retorted almost immediately.

"Im not weak..." Ryan muttered going back to eating small pieces of potato.

"Well... the pair of you will have plenty of time once we get to the capitol to sort out a battle plan. It would be advised to work together. Two surviving District tributes will also get a reward for their district if they both make it out alive i've been told" Their escort said, trying to drive the attention elsewhere.

Whilst Amber began to question her about that further, Ryan got to his feet and headed off into the next compartment in the train. He threw himself down on one of the beds and heaved a low sigh. How on earth had he been roped into this and why did he have such an annoying fellow tribute? He didn't want to work with Amber in the arena from what he had heard so far and with her big headed attitude, but he would never kill her. Infact, Ryan had no intention of killing anyone in that arena.

Theo

Theo had also struggled with his meal at the table with the escort and his fellow tribute. He had managed to just about eat two pieces of chicken, some potato's and a bread roll before feeling utterly full. The Escort had tried so hard to get them both talking, but neither were feeling too talkative, more so the little girl.

"You both need to talk sooner or later and start planning what you will do in the games dears" She had said, but both had just shrugged.

"Im going to bed" Theo said with a sad tone to his voice.

Theo took himself off to the window as soon as dinner was over, not wanting to be in anyone's company other than his own. Thankfully nobody followed him and soon he fell into a light sleep.

Pearl Mellark

"You two should probably plan a strategy for the Games," Malinda said.

"Already have one," John said.

"Oh. And what's that?" Malinda asked.

"Go to the Cornucopia," John replied.

"And...?" I pressed.

"And that's it," John said.

"Wait, you mean you want to get killed in the bloodbath?" I asked. "You're not even going to try?"

"Nope. Because I have nothing to go back to at home," John explained.

"I suppose that makes sense," I said, taking a drink of the water as I looked out the window as everything passed as the train got closer to the Capitol.

Gabriel Seif

I ate only half of the food. But I suppose that's better than Felicia, who barely even touched her food.

"So, any plans for the Games?" I asked.

"Yep. Run and hide!" Felicia responded.

"Really? That's it?" I asked. "You're not even going to try and fight so you can get out?"

"Nope. You don't have to kill anyone to get out, especially when you have those ruthless Careers," she pointed out. "I just have to last the few weeks and then I'll be back in District Seven."

"Not a very bad plan," I said.

"What are you going to do?" she asked.

"I'll team up with some of the other tributes and help them survive the Games," I answered with a shrug, pushing my plate away. "I'm going back to my room. See you in the morning. Good night."

"Good night," she said. I went to my room and laid down on the bed, thinking about the Games once again.

Amber and Ryan

"WAKE UP! We're nearly in the Capitol!" Amber shouted at the sleeping form of Ryan, who awoke with a start.

He cursed at Amber's retreating back before looking up at the window and out onto the lake surrounding the Capitol. It was quite spectacular he granted, but still... He would rather not be here right now and especially with Amber.

"You'll both be expected to pose for photo's when we disembark the train, so make yourself look, er..." The escort said looking Ryan over "As presentable as you can?" She said after a few seconds.

Ryan rolled his eyes at her before she too left the compartment.

As they got closer to the Capitol he could see people looking in at them from the platform which made him feel really uneasy. Amber however reveled in it and was waving at all who she passed. The closer they got to the station, the more and more people turned up and Ryan wondered how on earth they were going to get off the train with so many on the platform.

The train came to a halt and the escort looked at Amber and Ryan in a pleading sort of way.

"Brave faces on... And don't embarass me OR yourselves!" She spat, particularly in Ryan's direction.

"Welcome the tributes of District 2!!" A roaring voice from outside said as the doors slowly began to open.
