(This gives me an idea. Fan-fic time!)

"Weeee!" The calf had an imaginary friend to entertain her, since the other calf didn't want to play with her.

"Who's playing with you, young calf?" A sinister voice rung.

[LOL!]

Zaru flattened her ears. She held still upon the branch, as the sinister voice reached her ears. She tried to penetrate the darkness with her eyes, but could barely see the calf. She scented, and then shivered fearfully.

The calf cringed in fear, her eyes widened. The figure of a serpent appeared, but only as a shadow.

"Who's your friend, little calf? And can I play to?"

Zaru watched dimly through the night. She silently crept higher up the tree, hanging her basket on a nearby branch. She sat on a high limb and dug her claws into the bark.

The calf let out an eep and returned to the safety of the herd.

Drat! If only she had tripped over the trap I placed... the puma mumbled. She had used her tail to imitate a snake, cast a shadow. Only one of her plans failed, a rarity.

Zaru kept still, glad that the elk calf had fled. She watched the area, nose twitching. Sleep was not her plan for now, with the danger near.

The elk calf did not want to wake the others and get in trouble. She snuggled up next to her mother until morning came.

Zaru gazed up at the tree, looking for a thick branch. She sniffed warily, then clawed her way higher. The tree was quite large, so the higher branches were still thick. She found a spot, and grabbed a few leaves and scattered them on the limb. Then she settled down and let her eyes close. Her ears still pricked, she was not ready for sleep.

Aleeni shifted in her slumber, nose twitching. Her ears flattened as a dream frolicked in her mind, and her body gave a deep sigh. The elk slowly fell into deeper sleep.
