At the time Najah gave birth to her first litter, her mother was still the matriarch of the clan. Najah had hoped for strong female cubs... Maybe her mother would finally step down and let her take over.
To Najah's delight, the cubs were female. But she soon realized that her first-born wasn't exactly what she was hoping for. The cub was small, weak and slow... pathetic in every way. The second-born, however, showed potential. She was bigger and stronger than her sister, and she attacked the weaker cub almost right after she was born. Najah didn't try to stop her daughters from fighting. To her, the weakness of her first-born was a clear sign that the cub was unfit to live. She wouldn't waste time and effort raising a weak cub.
The second-born cub would probably have killed the first-born, had Najah's mother not come and saved the smaller cub. The new grandmother felt pity for the poor little one, and she reminded Najah that she also had been small and weak once. Reluctantly, Najah decided to give the cub a chance, and named her Aleela, meaning 'she cries'. The second-born daughter she named Amali, meaning 'hope'.
Amali was always her parents' favorite. She was strong, smart and beautiful, while her sister was (according to their mother) a disgrace to female hyenas. The sisters fought a lot, and the only one to stop them was their grandmother. To Amali, fighting her weaker sister was a way to show her power. To Aleela, fighting her sister was a way to show she wasn't as hopeless as everyone thought... although she never won.
One day, a sick lioness attacked Najah's mother. Amali and some other hyenas tried to chase the lioness away, but she wouldn't back off. Aleela realized that the lioness wasn't thinking clearly and didn't know what she was doing. Instead of joining the other hyenas in the fight, she tried to make them stop. After receiving a few wounds from the claws of the lioness, Aleela fled and tried to find help.
Aleela found her parents and the rest of the clan, and she led them to the site of the fight. At that point, the lioness was already dead... as were the hyenas who fought her. Najah was devastated of her favorite daughter's death, and furious of Aleela for surviving. Aleela didn't bother to even pretend to feel sorry for her sister's fate, but she was saddened by her grandmother's death. This, of course, made Najah even more furious...
