Kijinga's name literally means "stupid" in Swahili. Her mother, Uchungu, hated cubs, but when a male took over her pride and forced cubs upon her, she loathed the cubs so much that she gave them names that meant horrible things. She gave Kijinga's sister the name "Laana" which meant "curse," and her youngest cub "Kulia" which means "to weep." She insulted and abused her cubs, and trained Kulia so hard that she nearly died. Kijinga was outraged at her mother's behaviour towards Kulia, and demanded that Kulia be treated better.
