Skye is the adopted son of Nilkie, he was found by him when he was only 1 day old. Skye's pride was killed by a rival pride. But they didn't notice the little gray cub under the shade. So Nilkie (son of Kovu & Kiara) took him home. Then he showed the cub to his mate, Tula, once he was decided to be Nilkie and Tula's son, he had a ceremony, just like his grandmother Kiara. He is now Nilkie's heir.
