"Please, mother... Grab her paw...", Vitani muttered to herself while watching Zira hanging on the wall of the gorge. Kiara reached for Zira's paw and tried to help her up, but Zira just slashed her claws at the princess.
"Mother, don't be so proud... Everything can be ok again...", Vitani kept mumbling, although she knew her mother couldn't hear her.
Kiara tried to reach for Zira's paw once more... Zira pulled a crazy smile on to her face and let go off the cliff. Vitani gasped as she saw her mother fall into the raging river. Zira disappeared immediately under the water, but then... Her paw reached the surface! She was alive! A floating log pushed the paw under the surface again, but Vitani was sure she would see the paw again at any second - the paw and the rest of her mother. Vitani waited...
"Come on, mother! You can do it!"
Seconds passed, then minutes... But there was no sign of Zira anymore. The realization began to sink in for Vitani, although she tried to fight it.
"No. No, mother. You are not dead. You can't be. I know you can't be..."
But she could not deny the fact that she had not seen her mother come to the surface. If she was alive, she would have tried to get out of the water. And how could she still be alive if she could not breathe?
"No... No! Mother!"
It was all her fault. Had she not turned against Zira like this, she would still be alive. Maybe... If Vitani had tried a bit more... She should have tried more to convince her mother that war wasn't necessary.
While Vitani had tried to catch a glimpse of her mother, King Simba had helped his daughter climb up from the gorge. They were greeted by Queen Nala and the rest of the pride. Kovu, Vitani's brother, was there as well. Even Vitani's pride sisters seemed to be so happy about Kiara being fine and alive that they didn't bother feeling sorry for their former leader's fate.
Vitani could not take it. How could everyone be so happy? Sure, the war was over, but someone had died. Zira might not have been the best leader, but she was Vitani's mother. Maybe not the best mother on earth, but still the only mother Vitani had ever had...
While the others headed towards Pride Rock, Vitani stayed on the edge of the gorge. She wanted to be alone and pay last respects to her mother and older brother. Some time later - maybe minutes or hours - she heard some animals passing by, talking about a peace ceremony. She noticed that animals were gathering to Pride Rock. It was time to put the past behind... With a sigh, Vitani turned around and rushed to the ceremony.
