I believe you should just keep doing, what you're doing. You're going in the right direction, and I'm sure it won't be long, before you hit just the right style.
JUst keep drawing, and practice practice practice! I started looking at picture of lions, on google, and that sure helped me a lot, with the anatomy. One thing I also did, was reference - and sometimes even trace - the characters directly from the movie. Don't use it, in your finished artwork, but only as practice, to get the right feeling, until you feel sure about it on your own.
