Yo, It Be Snowing (Winter themed writing challenge)

Yo, It Be Snowing (Winter themed writing challenge)

Well for those who are less active in the fan fiction boards, allow me to explain this - a couple of weeks ago I stumbled across a thread made by Azdgari which challenged us authors to write a winter / Christmas themed piece for the season.

The result? Quite possibly the most bland thing I have ever wrote. I just couldn't think of a single decent idea so just blasted this out in the end, last minute. Yes, I know it is horrible. However I did get a new idea whilst writing this, so I promise the next thing I write will be at least slightly less rubbish lol.

Hope ya like poor and rushed writing, because there is about a page or so of it to follow! :)

After the encounter with the hyenas, Mufasa had been keeping a close eye on his son. But today he would decide to be a little more relaxed and allow Simba to explore more on his own, after all it was rare that snow would fall across the Pride Lands, let alone this much of it.

Mufasa remembered the snow, where he came from there had also been snow once before. He remembered the joy it brang with it, and the frozen water that he would slide across with his family. Spirits were up back then, just as they were now. His son Simba had by now awoken, and the young cub padded over next to his father, where they looked out into the distance.

“Whoa...” Simba couldn’t believe his eyes, he had heard only stories about snow up until now but here it was, just as his father had described. It had covered everything; it dripped from the branches and leaves of the tall trees and covered the green grass to the point where the grass was no longer visible, replaced by thick blankets of white soft snow. It was no longer snowing though, and the snow would melt away by the evening so Simba was eager to get away from Pride Rock and explore.

“Dad, can me and Nala go and play?” Simba asked, fearing that his father still didn’t fully trust him.

Mufasa turned towards Simba, but before he answered he saw in his son’s eyes the hope for happiness. He gave it a little thought before answering “Very well.”
“Alright!” Simba shouted, racing toward the den around the corner where Nala lived.

“But he is coming with you.” Mufasa said, gesturing to Zazu.

“Aw but...” Simba stopped himself from answering back. Mufasa wasn’t someone you’d want to argue back to and it wouldn’t do much good anyway, he was far too wise and would always have an answer to his son’s answers and just about anybody else’s for that matter.

Simba wouldn’t let the forced inclusion of Zazu stop him enjoying himself today. It’s not that they didn’t get along it’s just that Zazu took his job of escorting the young prince very seriously.
“Tread carefully. The last thing I want is to have to return you to your father injured.” Zazu said, hovering above Simba as they traversed the colossal home, the snow was slippery in places and a fall from this height was not a nice thought.

They soon arrived at the den and Nala was already waiting for him there. After a brief rejoice, the two of them, followed by Zazu, descended Pride Rock, down onto the endless oceans of white fluff below. There the two of them continued playing, they play fought which was even more fun than usual in the snow. And they rolled snowballs and passed them to each other and occasionally threw them at various targets, including Zazu.

Although the three were getting cold and tired, they wanted to make the most of the day, which eventually of course began to turn to night. Gone was the grey sky, replaced by a dark black with shades of light blue and stars dotted around. The snow had started to fall again; it would probably still be here tomorrow anyway. So, cold, hungry and tired, the three of them made their way back to Pride Rock.

However the snow was falling faster and Mufasa was getting a little worried, so he left the den to search for the cubs and round them back in. He was strong and had experience of how to traverse in blizzards.
He spotted them just outside of Pride Rock, where they had been stuck for the past 10 minutes or so. Zazu unable to fly against the forceful wind and the cubs couldn't see much as the snow fell like shards against their face and made it hard to look forwards.
“Dad!” Simba shouted out “Help!”

Mufasa picked up the two cubs, Nala rested on his back while Simba on his mane and Zazu perched on his shoulder. He put his head down and walked through the treacherous conditions, up the slopes of Pride Rock and into a den where, after having exerted such a huge amount of energy, he fell to the ground.

Simba wiped the snow from his face and from his fathers “Thanks dad...” he said regretfully, feeling a little ashamed of himself for allowing the group to get stuck.
“Well. We must always look out for our family at this time of year.” Mufasa replied and smiled at them.

Hey man, half the battle's writing anything at all. You and I appear to be the only one who did get around to it, so props. And don't be so hard on yo'self! Although this was definitely rushed and a bit skeletal, I still enjoyed reading it. It felt very JCWTBK-ish with the cubs rolling out with Zazu. I liked the bit about using him as a target. We essentially had the same idea for both of our stories: "Snowy Pridelands! " so great minds think alike!

Yeah I mean it's like I couldn't get an idea that would work and that I would be enthusiastic enough about to flesh out. So I just went with what I think a day in the "Snowy Pridelands!" would be like and attempted to make a story out of it.
Thanks for reading, though! Always appreciate feedback on stuff, even if it's for a "for fun" thing like this :]
