About college: To dorm or not?

I'm still a bit too young to enter college however I've been thinking about whether I would dorm or not. It seems more fun to dorm. You get your own dorm and it's like your own mini-house.
However my parents..I feel bad about leaving them. I've always told them I would stay with them. Where I go, they go. Even if it's only 2 - 3 years I still feel bad..
What did you do in college? Or if you've never been in college yet, what do you plan on doing? If you don't plan on dorming where do you plan on living? Are you going to rent or buy a house? Live with a friend? Live with a family member?

I'm going to an art acadamy 100 miles away from home, so I'm afraid I'll have to.

I'll be happy to leave though ^^;

At my college, we actually did not have a choice in the matter except for more extreme circumstances (i.e. we already live on campus anyway); for the first two years we have to live in the dorms. I actually recommend it though, at least for a year. You meet a ton of people and can do a bit of networking. Dorm life isn't for everyone (I myself prefer solitude so it could get a bit testy at times) but I think it's something that is good to experience at least for a year. That said, I didn't have a choice in the matter and my university is by no means tiny. It's all up to you. I'd recommend it for maybe a year though if it doesn't end up being required already by wherever you end up going.

I recommend it for at least a year, especially if you have problems meeting people. I live off campus, more or less alone, and I sometimes wish I'd gotten into residence. If you do choose to stay with your parents I'd strongly recommend getting involved in a group/organization like a sorority so you still have that network. Living on campus can also be real convenient in terms of travel time ect.

I'd choose not to go on campus.. but it depends on how far you live off college. I was bullied and an outsider in the group, so for me it would have been very lonely then.... besides that, I'm not a person that likes the party culture there and I prefer to go my own way.
It depends on how your situation is, what you decide.
