I love Balto, and personally I think it's quite underrated. It's based on a true story, it's got good animation and is overall quite beautiful. Personally, I like watching it in the holiday season because of the snow. :)

I don't know exactly why it is so underrated, but I'm guessing part of it is because it's not a Disney movie. Many movies get overlooked simply because they are not Disney/Pixar, which is a shame because there are some beautiful non-Disney animated movies out there. Balto, The Land Before Time, and Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron being some of them.

I also don't think enough people have been exposed to the movie. Once again, Disney is the most popular choice for parents when they want to get their child a movie, so Balto is often overlooked. Also, I am not entirely sure if Balto is still in stores, I haven't seen it for a long time, that's for sure.

So between not being Disney, and it being an older movie, it simply doesn't get much publicity.

As for the message boards, I think most of the boards die because most of Balto can be discussed at Animation Source. And I think the Balto forum there died because there's nothing left to discuss after however many years that site has been up.

... I think I just rambled a bit.

And Juhouh, it's a movie worth seeing. ;)

Buffy: Oh my Gosh! Me too. I watch it during the Winter. :D
Yeah I think that is one of the Reasons. I think it's Quite sad. Many times, It turns out That the Movie is amazing.

I agree with Buffy. She replied like I would have. Actually, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron is my favorite movie of all time. It's non-Disney. I've known of it since I was 5 years old; I've only known of The Lion King since I was around 9 or 10. And Spirit may be equally well-known, if not less well-known, than Balto. And a sequel was never made to it. I've actually never seen Balto from beginning to end, as I don't own a copy of it, don't have a way to play DVDs, and don't know where to obtain a digital copy (or even if one exists for legal purchase). However, I have read the plot summary on Wikipedia (I read a lot of those) and have seen clips of it on YouTube. If nothing else, it has beautiful animation. And I have a "thing" for animated movies--especially those centered around animals or anthropomorphic animals (like TLK).

And I have one more explanation of why Balto (released in December of 1995) underrated: According to Wikipedia, its theatrical release was overshadowed by the release of Pixar's Toy Story (released in November 1995), but it did "recoup" its budget, doing modest business at the box office and having strong video sales (gaining a "cult" following).

It's a shame that the movie is underrated. :sad2: It is very common that two movies battle each other for profits when they were released the same time such as Balto and Toy Story and Pocahontas and The Lion King. Although The Lion King and Pocahontas were not released at the same time there was a struggle in regards to production time.
Spoiler: show
During the early production time of The Lion King many animators, producers, etc. etc. were rather work on Pocahontas as opposed to The Lion because they feared that The Lion King would be a failure and therefore the concentration slightly shifted from The Lion King to Pocahontas, but the movie The Lion King was completed and released (obviously  ) just a little later.
Personally I love the movie. It had memorable characters, great instrumental music and song lyrics, and the plot was based on true events in an animated and fun way for everybody to enjoy. In a way it's just like The Lion King except there is no form of monarchy, nobody murders each other, and there isn't a son who feels guilty, runs away, have a ghost who appears and encourages the son that he needs to take his place in the "Circle of Life" and finally kicks his uncle's butt so that he can take his rightful place. It's always disappointing that movies like Balto, Spirit: Stallion of The Cimarron are underated because as Buffy said they are made from the Disney/Pixar corporation.

I think it's partially because of things I pointed out in the movie's thread. There's just not enough room for speculation in the series for discussions about it to last very long. There aren't enough plot holes, time gaps, and semi-canon characters. There also aren't enough background characters that people could speculate about. I think forums for it die out because it's too straightforward.
