Reminds me a bit of the cancelled Gotham High, an animated show where Bruce is in highschool and all his villains are classmates.

Two high-budget, traditionally animated films. One covering Mufasa and Scar as cubs, the other picking up where SP left off. It's important to note that with a prequel, you can still do surprise endings and whatnot. Just need to have surprises that are different from the first film. With enough creativity, a prequel to TLK could have plenty of unpredictable moments.
