What do you mean lions don't roar like that?

This has been in my head for a while...And I really need to say it. (Sorry if this is in the wrong place. I wasn't exactly sure where this would fit).

Being one at the time of The Lion KIng's release, and about four or five when the second came out...I, of course, didn't know much about the types of animals the characters were. Only that they were "cute". And...I also did not have any interest in the Animal Planet channel, didn't even know what it was...If it was even around back then. Even when I got a little older.

So...I thought lions really did roar all mighty like Simba.

Until I finally came across Animal Planet and a special on lions. I was...What, eight? And was like: WHAT?? :?

Yeah. I hope I'm not the only one who thought this when they were little.

Do you mean the sound or the mouth posture? Because the sounds is pretty close. The mouth thing however... definitely not  I think I used to think they roared like that too. So you're not alone ;)

Its just not quite as dramatic in reality as it is in The Lion King, it sounds pretty close though like Azerane said ^^.

They usually build up to a full roar by making "chuffing" noises. And they usually hold their mouths in a "O" shape when they do so.

Here's a good video I found of it on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aUfDxRelPHg They start wider and their mouth narrows into more of a triangle shape towards the end.

The epic roar is really one of the few points where Disney took liberty of real life and made something, not real, but MORE EPIC!!!
But really: how would that scene where Simba reclaims the Pridelands be like if he used a real lion roar? It would be... the biggest anti-climax of the century.

^Actually, last time I checked, all cats purr. This includes lions, but I am not 100% sure.

Only 95%. 8-)

Wikipedia says one thing but this site says another: http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m ... _17338585/ , which is what I've heard before. Interesting:)

Only domestic cats and cheetahs purr properly. Lions, tigers, etc make a sounds similar, but they don't make a sound when they breathe in and out like cats do.
