I thought it was weird they said "nevermore the hyenas come"...and yet STILL sing about digging a tunnel.

That's what a song reprise is supposed to say: repeat the original melody of the song with changed lyrics to reflect the further development of the situation or characters. True, it's repeating the same melody, but the meerkat chorus are singing about no longer having to dig tunnels and hide from the hyenas.
