I mostly see a desire to please Zira and also a jealousy of Kovu as the extent of Nuka's "dark side". However, Vitani seems like she was becoming more and more like Zira until Kiara was kind to her. If Kiara hadn't gotten there and the Outlanders had won the fight, would Vitani have ended up being just as bad as her mother?

Vitani absolutely loved Kovu from what I can tell. However had things turned out differently Vitani would have eventually become just as evil, not so much twisted as Zira. With Scar avenged and The Outsiders living in The Pride Lands, there would have been no catalyst to drive Vitani mad.
