Why did the Pride almost let Scar kill Simba?

So, Simba did confess to being responsible for Mufasa's death, but also made clear that it was an accident. Given how desperate the Pridelanders were to get out of the bad situation with Scar as king, I'm surprised that they would have let Scar murder Simba (if Simba hadn't fought back or was unable to fight back, they'd have watched their last hope be thrown to his death.)

Also, if they were dumb enough to believe that Simba really conspired to murder Mufasa, even as a cub, why would they believe a confession of Scar that he killed Mufasa when Simba had knocked him over and was nearly strangling him?

They were in shock maybe. A lot of things happened in a short time. First, someone who had been presumed dead for years came back and suddenly that someone ”admitted” that had killed the former king which weren’t expected either. So they were most likely confused and didn’t know what to do. And Nala at least did react when Simba over the edge. When Scar admitted that he in fact was the murderer that was more expected, that why the pride attacked then. That my theory at least.

The lionesses were definitely shocked and confused about the whole ordeal. They couldn't intervene or rebut because neither of them were there when the stampede happened that got Mufasa killed.
