Some updates to MLK

Never had a problem with them myself, and to be fair I did not really use them before anyway, so removing them has not changed anything for me and I could argue that, to that end all it has done is removed something a lot of people were enjoying.
Also there is barely any difference between having one chat thread, and the chatroom especially if you are cracking down on the rules in the chatroom as well as the forum itself.

That said it seems a lot of people are happy to see these threads go so yeah - can not be a bad thing overall but I think it would be worth bearing in mind that just because you do not use something, does not mean that nobody else does.... BEFORE we make changes that effect every member.

Sure, chat threads are ''spam'' but useless topics in the Den such as ''what are you thinking right now'' aren't spam threads... Makes no sense, MLK.

What will be next regarded as ''spam'' threads? The member Q&A threads, perhaps?

Well actually, it does. Since those threads actually have their own unique purposes, whereas having more than one generic chat thread, does not have a purpose at all.

A member chat thread DOES have a purpose, which is socialising with each other whitout being bound to a certain topic that dominates the thread. Seems more usefull to me then whining about life in those threads at the Den. But anyway, I don't really care about that very much. My biggest concern is that in the future some crybabies at MLK might start whining at the member Q&A threads becomming ''spam''. And when all member Q&A threads are locked, someone else will start whining again untill there is almost no more way left to socialise at MLK with other members.

I guess. But I mean we only need one member chat thread not tied to a specific chat thread, not a dozen. I mean they are essentially duplicate threads just with different OP, if everyone made the same thread 12 times it would be a pretty uninteresting place...

Likewise, the member Q&A threads also have a purpose which is why they are not going anywhere... I can not ask RayCat question in someone elses Q&A thread, right? But I can have a generic off topic chat with here in ANY OT random chat thread, which is why we only really need one in my opinion. I get what you are saying, but I do not really think Member Q&A is in the same league as the general chat threads were.

And "whining about life" is not always random crap that nobody wants to read - I actually do care about the members here and when bad crap happens to them, sometimes they post it in threads like "What are you thinking" or "feeling", and can get support on it through them. True enough we do have a Personal Issues section but sometimes it is not something personal that is the problem...

Interesting thoughts though =)

From the impression I'm getting, that's the direction their already taking.

This here is really the only real reason why I am still against the lock: locking the den topics is only a temporary solution until people find elsewhere to spam. And you can't simply keep locking up new topics...

@Flip Well, I really HOPE you are right that the member Q&A will not be going anywhere. But it just bugs me that if we want to socialise with a specific MLK member, we are from now on forced to do that in a spammy chatboard, where it'll be quite difficult to talk since one conversation usally dominates the whole chatboard. Also, according to the staff, they made this change as well for our own ''safety'' so that non MLK members can't find out personal things about us. I say this is rubbish, because we are not little kids that need ''protection''. We ourselves are responsible for what we post, and I dont think the staff should take responsibility over us.

@DGfone Yes, I agree.

Regarding hiding the Member HQ to guests, anyone could see all of your personal info. Your contact info, your picture. We felt it safer to only have members be able to see it so that not everyone else and their brother could. We're not calling anyone little kids, or anything of the sort. We were just trying to make things a bit safer. It is a pretty scary thought when anyone can see all of your contact info and your pic and such. if you post it elsewhere, that's fine it's your choice, but we felt it best to hide it to guests. I don't think that's any huge hindrance. xD

While "we" are not little kids who need protecting as you (somewhat bluntly) put it. There are kids on this site, and the staff do in fact owe a little bit of responsibility to monitoring what those young ones can see and who can see what they post. Understand that the minimum age for joining is not 13, you can join younger than that with permission from a parent as I understand that. And while fair enough in that scenario a kid may post their MSN (contact info thread is there) it is still preferable that guests can not see that information. At the moment there are 205 guests online out of 231 users, that means a lot of people are just randomly browsing, people of all ages, countries and such... So it is better that all of those people are unable to see the member HQ where personal details are sometimes posted. The fact is you do not know how old those guests are, it only takes one child to post their details in there and for the wrong person to be able to see it.

My Facebook used to be there, which if you go onto it has all my other details, where I live, where I work, my college, family, friends and more. I do not mind people here being able to see it - but I do have a problem with random people (not to mention, banned members) being able to also see it.

In short there is no reason for guests to be able to see the Member HQ - if you want to post there then you would have to log in anyway.
I mean, heck didn't someone post their mobile number there before?

These changes were clearly aimed at some members of the board more than others, they have little relevance to me personally but I understand that there are a lot of other people on here which they may apply to. Its not my site, or yours, or even really Moka's... There are way too many people on here for that sort of mentality, sometimes at its busiest there are around 500 individual people on and we have 3000 members (not counting the... Countless amounts of guests). They are not ghosts, they are real people that exist believe it or not. So some changes, such as this one - do not apply to everyone as much as they do to others. ^^
