What do we think?

I don't get it. They got the rights for the name "Taka", but couldn't make them brothers and sons of Ahadi because because of copyright?
I don't even know anymore.... :?
Thanks for the share @Moka. At least in this movie they seem to have turned up the brightness and contrast. The first remake was very dull in color. This one is still dull (there is no competing with 2d animation), but at least is not as gray.

To me personally, the classic 2d Lion King introduced more than just another franchise to the world of animation. It invented an entirely new artstyle and approach to drawing animal characters that many people have since fell in love with and is universally recognized across multiple generations for it's uniqueness and charm. Therefore, the transition to the CGI formula, irregardless of color saturation or brightness, effectively strips this beloved household name of what made it special and memorable in the first place.

I know that some artists have come up with creative interpretations of the original TLK style over the years, but these always maintained a level of connection and ressemblance to the source material to the point where anyone is able to make a direct association between the two at first glance.

This is not the case when it comes to the highly realistic depictions of CGI productions, where non anthropomorphic animals look basically the same across different worlds and are deprived of all the captivating features that only more “cartoonish” stylizations can provide. You could pretty much drop Aslam from Narnia into the 2019 remake or the upcomimg Mufasa movie and he wouldn’t look out of place there, and the same applies to any other fictional lifelike looking lion from a different universe.

Now visuals aside, which are my only major pet peeve with Disney’s current outlook on the franchise, the actual plot seems interesting enough to make the movie worth watching for me, under the mindset that it’s storyline takes place in an alternate, and completely unrelated dimension from the 1994 and 1998 releases.

IDK. The trailer looks interesting, and learning more about Scar's history especially is a neat idea but telling a new Lion King story in live action rather than in animated form just feels wrong to my inner child. I didn't mind the remake, and in general thought it was pretty good, but I feel like new stories in the universe should come in cartoon form first.

I'm optimistic, and as an aside, I'm now also wondering just how old Zazu is supposed to be.

@CEVRAM Agreed. It makes me think of the first attempt at that sonic remake. Fans were outraged at the CGI because 1) it looked horrible, and 2) it wasn't akin to the original style whatsoever. As an upside, the studio actually listened to fans and redid it to make it look good.

Interesting. Is this the first "Disney live-action remake" that isn't a remake?

Yeah, that first CGI character concept for the live action Sonic movie was shockingly bad, but at least the studio learned from their mistakes and now Sonic 3 is apparently having a pretty good reception from it's fanbase.

Conversely, the Mufasa movie seems to be far more polarizing among Lion King fans and even casual consumers of mainstream entertainment. And no matter how well it's release does at the box office, it'll never become a widespread generational phenomenon like the beloved 1994 classic, not by any chance.

Out of all the animated franchises out there, TLK was probably one of the most ill suited to make the aesthetic transition into modern CGI, but Disney just couldn't resist the temptation to squeeze every penny they could get from the brand name by greedily preying on it's cultural status as an universally acclaimed icon of cinematic history. Because that's the only thing this upcoming movie will carry along from the one that created the whole franchise, it's brand marker, devoided of what actually gave it meaning and identity in the first place.

I am only speculating on this, but as far as Them using The Name Taka, but nothing else might not have anything to do with copyright. It "Might" instead be a case of Disney being able to use whatever They want from what amounts to officially licensed Fan Fiction. Like how Admiral Thrawn was brought into official Star Wars Canon by Disney after They declared that only The movies and TV Shows were canon after They bought LucasFilm.

The Preview has Me very excited for this movie. So unless They try to pull a Maleficent and say that The CGI universe is true and The 2D universe is some kind of myth/lie to make Scar look bad. There is no reason to not give this movie a chance.
