tlk 1994 not getting a best picture nomination can be boiled down to many things

-back then, the bp nomination list was not 10 movies but just 4? or 5?

-the people who vote on oscars and run the show are very snobby and beauty and the beast 1991 getting a nomination was a miracle at the time. it took decades for an animated movie to get nominated. they created best animated film category to try and keep animated films out of the bp nominees though some have been nominated since batb.

-while tlk 1994 is a beloved classic today and made loads of money at the box office, critics in 1994 were more harsh towards it than batb or aladdin or tlm. roger eberts liked batb more calling tlk good but not great (he thought batb was great) .

Etc.

TLK 1994 did win two oscars and a grammy i think? And has a legacy that has outlasted most other Disney movies.

also the thing about roger ebert came from the video review. his written review is more detailed, a bit more kind, and he gives tlk 3.5 out of 4 stars.

I read that another reason why Barry Jenkins took on the project is because another arthouse director, Chloe Zhao, was given a chance with Marvels The Eternals.

Marvel Studios is no stranger to letting lesser known directors who direct low budget stuff a chance at a big movie. Sometimes it works out, like James Gunn and Guardians of the Galaxy or Taika Waititi for Thor Ragnarok or sometimes it doesn't work out.... Edgar Wright was originally going to direct Ant Man (ok so Edgar Wright isn't a small name but he's barely a mid sized name).

The big difference between this movie and tlk 2019 is creative freedom. If this really is just a prequel then Barry Jenkins has far more creative freedom than Jon Favreau ever had.

Sure, he can't do certain things that go against the continuity of tlk 2019 but

Other than that, who knows which direction the story will go. And that excites me.

Yes TLK legacy outlasted other Disney movies. I agree that there's an element of surprise with Barry Jenkins's movie, and he does have creative freedom if it really is a prequel. If Beale Street Could Talk and Moonlight are uniquely made, so we could expect something fresh from him. His partner Lulu Wang who's also a brilliant filmmaker can also influence his vision - they both like to bounce ideas off with each other. Can't wait for more deets soon.

Highly doubt it’ll be the lion king but it’s worth keeping an eye out for. https://twitter.com/skylershuler/status/1340805039611203584?s=21

Also, had read this interesting article yesterday (I think this is the one Elton was talking about the other day, but if someone else hasn’t read it themselves) that had came originally from an interview with Jenkins. https://apple.news/AKopyw8vYR3KtnpyXWAodQQ

through process of elimination i doubt its about jungle cruise.... movie has already filmed and has a release date.

dunno if its about the little mermaid. it already has a lot of the cast already chosen

cruella is pretty much done so I doubt the news is about that.

it might be about tlk. they will likely start casting soon considering that its going to be all voice acted.

For anyone who was holding their breath, it was a post about Disenchanted. No Lion King stuff yet.

That said, the buzz from the bees I may or may not have heard is that Jenkins is really taking hold of this project and making it his own thing. Definitely time to give his filmography a (re)watch if you're interested in seeing how he tells stories.

We know the prequel part is gonna be about Mufasa (and presumably the love triangle between his brother and Sarabi) but what do you think the sequel portion will actually consist of? They're still referencing The Godfather Part II as a story structure template, so there's gonna be a back and forth across two different time periods. Do you think they're gonna expand the lion roster of characters or add more non-lions in prominent speaking roles? Any Lion Guard references? And what new actors would you like to see in the cast at all, regardless of their role? Also, if we're gonna get to see a teenage/young adult version of him instead of the mature adult we're used to hearing, who do you think should voice Mufasa? Questions abound.

wait, where did you get the info on a love triangle plot? none of the sources i've read mention it being about that.

The love triangle is just my presumption. I don't really see how we'd get a Mufasa prequel plot that doesn't in some way address that relationship between he, Scar, and Sarabi, when that was one of the few genuinely new spins that the 2019 film introduced to the lore.

My guess is that would be a part of the storyline. Would like to see how Zazu came to serve the pride as well as a side plot.

Addressing the love triangle between Mufasa, Sarabi, and Scar is a must.

Establish Zira as a character for any options going forward.

Establish Banzi and Ed as other Hyenas in Shenzi's Clan (Because if Your not going to mention the other Two top Hyena's that work for Shenzi by name in the 1st film. Why change Their names at all)?

I'd love for Them to address The Topic of Nala's Father. Perhaps Sarafina could finally have Her name Mentioned on Screen.

I still think what we see of Simba in this movie will be from when He takes The Throne to Nala announcing Her pregnancy. Hence why Disney won't say sequel as nothing Post the 1st movie is going to happen.

I'd love to see Simba And Nala's wedding.

Perhaps Surak and Nirmala could be guests at Simba And Nala's wedding.

At The very least establish that There are other Lion Prides out there.

As for Who could voice a Young Adult Mufasa?...I can't imagine Mufasa not having a James Earl Jones type voice. I have no idea who could voice Him.
